I had the same problem, never seen anything like it before. Solution:
Go to the Canon.com website and download The whole driver and software package. It gives you the whole interface to do everything the printer can do (also graphics software).
Without the graphics and software installed, all you've got is minimal printer drivers, no Canon folder, no manual, no interface, nothing.

you can try it by using the scanner option on the control panel. If you are using windows operating system, go on start menu, select control panel and double click scanners & cameras. Double click the scanner online and start scanning the documents. Save it in the format you want but it is usually default as jpeg.
scanned documents usually saved as .pdf file if you run the scan option directly on the printer. By pressing the SCAN button the printer. So do not use this option if you do not want the documents to be saved as pdf files.
