If it is a SD or SDHC memory card, there is a small write protect switch on the side of the card. Remove the memory card from the camera and slide the switch to the unlocked position.

I have had this camera for two years and never had a problem. Now when I switch it on the screen shows the message, " Memory card is write protected" and the camera will not function.

On the memory card is a slide lock that locks the card from being accidentally written to or erased. embossed with a lock that is unlocked/locked.
Somehow this slide lock has been moved to the write protection mode/locked. Could have happened if you removed the memory card lately.
Remove the memory card and slide the lock to unlock reinstall the card and that should cure your problem.

Memory card locked

And you looked if the card was locked?
The 64GB card is unlocked the 32 GB card is locked. So make sure the switch is up when you see your card like these two.
When you are sure your card is unlocked, just check if all contacts of the card and in the camera are still clean, shiny, and straight. (no bent in any contact)

Memory card locked problem

You neglected to specify the make and model of your camera, so I'm assuming it uses SD/SDHC cards.

SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

After setting memory card, showing 'memory card error' in camera screen and then showing 'memory card locked'. Please email me for unlocking procedure. Thanks.

The camera have to format the card
before you can use it.

There is a slider on the card.
Try to move the slider so the card is
not write protectet.

Look in your cameras manual
for the settings of formating a card.

Good luck.

LCD shows MEMORY LOCKED even thought card is NOT LOCKED!

Go thru all the pages on the camera setup in the camera. You may find a memory lock conrol. That is there to keep you from accidently erasing photos.
