SOURCE: How do we get rid of the UL code on our Kenmore
Thwere is a switch under the lid that will not spin the tub, if the lid is up. This may be bent or broken. Lift lid and shine a flashlight down the slot underneath the protrusion on the lid. you should e a'plank' across the hole. No plank the swithch or the ;Plank" is broken. Most likely the plank, or actuator.needs replaced.
To replace , and or check the actuator, you have to remove the top of the machine. On a Kenmore here are 2 screws at the top back of the washer thaqt hold down 2 metal plates that go up to the back of the control panel. When the screws and plates are removed you can pry up the top of the washer with a stout screwdriver. after removing the top you can un screw the safety inlerlock, that's what I call it, and check for the bent/broken actuator or broken switch. If all looks okay then you need to take an ohm meter and check for continuity through the switch. Place one test lead at each end of the switch, removing and marking the wires on the switch. Press the actuator and you should see less than 5 ohms on the meter, if that is okay, then it gets more involved.
