I have a 350 mpi mercruiser that wont start after it has been stopped after a run for about half an hour. the engine splutters and seems to be starving for fuel. only happens stopped and left for half an hour.after engine is cold starts and rune fine. no problems in running and fuel pressure is spec at 43psi. all running temps and gauges are at spec. the problem "developed" intermittantly but now it breaks down regularly. i have checked iac valve and non return valve from fuel tank, all ok.

Agree above, check plugs see if the are wet, could actually be flooded condition due to bad injectors

Have you checked the spark plugs ? and its leads, the spark plug can tell you a lot about how the engine is running.

Doesn't appear to be any software involved, it is just an electronic switch and the part is also used on washing machines for 1/20th of the price!

Can water be forced up past pistons in a 5.7 350 mercruiser.

you would not get sufficient water past the rings to cause what you describe
there has be a fault in the assembly as the water is getting in past the water manifold into the intake to suck water in on top of the pistons do you have an operational back flow valve in the exhaust to stop water being sucked back into the engine past the open exhaust valves on shut down
are you running an oil cooler in the system that could be a reason for water in the sump oil if it is leaking

Check the torque on the head bolts. I can't tell you what it is, been a long time. If they are good, run it till it dies. Then check for spark at the plugs or coil/s. No spark replace the coil/s. My guess would be coils. But I have seen the head loosen up.

Why is it hard to start my Mercruiser 7.4L MPI after a hot run?

Electric choke? Try retrofitting a manual choke. I think the electric choke is closing over a hot engine, thinking that the engine's cooler than it really is. A manual choke will allow you to start it with no choke at all when you know the motor's already warmed up.

have you had the catalytic convertor back pressure tested. the symptoms you describe indicate a faulty convertor.
