Hold down the 'on' switch for 20 seconds. The Kindle will reboot - you will not lose anything on your Kindle.

If you need to reset it to factory default (which will remove ALL content) then:

  1. From Home, press the Menu button, and then select Settings.
  2. In Settings, press the Menu button again, and then select Reset to Factory Defaults. Your device will power off and power back on.

How to reset the Amazon Kindle (useful when the unit is frozen)

Hi.

The Amazon Kindle is known for having several firmware issues, and it is not unusual seeing the unit freezing and not starting.

To start you can attempt doing a soft reset. To do a soft reset press and hold the <ALT>, <Shift>, and <R> keys simultaneously. The Kindle display should go blank for few seconds, and then restart.

If your Amazon kindle is still frozen, try resetting the unit to factory default settings with the hard reset procedure below. Procedure is different, depending on the Kindle model.

All you have to do to reset the Amazon Kindle 2 and Kindle DX is pressing and holding down the power button for about twenty seconds, then release the button and let the unit restart.

If instead you have the previous model, the amazon Kindle one, then you will need to open the back cover by pressing it and sliding it to the right with your finger, same as when you have to replace the batteries.

Behind the cover you will see the reset hole switch.

Push and hold a sharp pointed object, like a paper clip, or the tip of a pencil inside the hole button located under the battery cover.

Wait about ten seconds until the Kindle restarts and resets to default settings.

The last procedure and the picture below refer to Kindle one only. If you have kindle two, then please use the first procedure.

If the above does not fix the problem, then the unit is faulty. In that case contact Amazon to get support.

Regards.

How to set password if we lost the old

Hey there,
If you cannot enter the password, you will need to reset your kindle back to factory settings. On the back panel, there is a small reset button: http://www.blogkindle.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/kindle-reset.gif
  1. First, you need something pointed like a paper clip or the tip of your earing.
  2. Now, open the back cover of your kindle by pressing it firmly while sliding it to the right using your thumbs.
  3. You will then see the reset button as shown on the picture. Use the paper-clip or your earing's pointed tip to press on the reset button.
  4. A few seconds after pressing the button, your kindle will then reboot and will be restored.
Note that you will need to reload all of your eBooks back onto the kindle after doing this.
