I have an old VCR its a Hitachi F361 Digital Audio Tracking with Hi-Fi stereo. Its hooked up to a electrohome tv thats 20 years or more old. I use the VCR (and its remote) to watch tv. The volume on the tv has a highpitched buzz that changes depending on the volume level. But lately when I turn the vcr on towatch tv over top of the high pitched buzz is a scratchy "buzz thats very loud and changes randomly (and is not affected by the tv's volume setting). I only hear this newer scratchy buzz when the vcr is on. I tried checking the cord connections, wiggling the connections, and propping up the vcr at a different angle hoping that would solve the problem. There also seems to be a correlation bettween the tracking lines on the vcr screen and the scratchy noise, when the lines increase so does the noise. Any suggestions on how to fix this are greatly appreciated. -twilight89
You need to change the Audio / Control Head, as well as the Pinch Roller of the machine. A worn out Audio cum Control Head will reflect in poor tracking and so will cause the above problems.
Ok, Open the VCR cover. You will be able to see the mechanism, rt? If you play a tape with the cover open, you will observe, that on the right hand side, there is a black rubber roller around an inch high! That is the Pinch Roller. And immediately after that, the tape will come into contact with a steel head around an inch high. This is the the Audio / control head. The audio/control head is fixed to the mechanism with two screws on, with a central Alignment screw. Do not open the Central screw, but onlt the other two fixing screws. There is a white plastic lock on the roller. gently prise it out using a flat screw driver. REMEMBER to do this only after you have stopped the tape and ejected it, and have unpluggedthe VCR from the mains. I have only asked you to play the VCR to enable you to identify the twio parts. Take the Roller and the Audio / control Head to spares shop and get the replacements. Now replace them in the manner how you had removed them.
If you are having problems of bad audio during playback of stereo tapes, then I advise that at one go, also change the Video heads. The earlier Stereo VCRs had a pair of 'Flying' Audio Heads fixed to the Video Head Drum assembly, and over a period of time, with regular usage, the get worn out, and also cause bad picture with bad tracking and audio.
The Video head Drum is a round (around 2.5 inch wide round polished drom. There will be two screws holding itin position. Open screws, gently lift up the head assembly.Be very very careful not to damage the tiny heads affixed to the lower part of the drum.
