You have first put in a line tap. If the freezer system has been open it must be put in vac. to get moisture out. Then with interior coil exposed put in a few oz and start compressor. with compressor running add while watching interior coil/ you add slow til coil frosts to 3/4 then your done

ISN'T GETTING COLD NEED TO KNOW HOW TO ADD FREON PLEASE ?

Unless you have a lot of expensive refrigeration tools and a license to recover and buy freon, then you need a serviceman.

Why will it not come on?

The rust shouldn't make any difference.

When you plug it in, does the interior light turn on? If not, suspect the wall outlet - test it for power by plugging in something else. If the interior light turns on, listen very closely to the freezer. It should hum. If it doesn't, toy with the freezer control inside - it may just be turned off. Turn it to about midpoint and listen very closely to it again. If still no hum, wait a short while, then feel carefully on the outside of the cabinet - it may be running through a defrost cycle. The outside of the cabinet may get warm while that's happening, especially around the door gaskets. Wait a while (half an hour, an hour, for the defrost cycle to finish - the freezer should run then.

If it never hums, then the compressor isn't running, so adding freon won't make any difference. Instead, suspect the defrost timer - that's a little electronic circuit board inside.

If it HUMS but never gets COLD, then you potentially have a freon leakage problem. It's difficult at best, though, to refill a refrigerator or freezer - they don't usually have refill taps.

Oh, yes. If the internal light never comes on but you've proven that the wall outlet has power, it's entirely possible that the plug is bad and needs to be redone.

Explain how to refill R134 freon

you should not refill freon, first because it is illegal. second, if you need a recharge it will just leak out again. third, to do it correctly will require braising with an acetylene torch.

The motor seems to be running. Food is not staying completely frozen and I have it turned up to the coldest it will go. Freezer is 5 years old.

Hi, if you have turned the freezer to the coldest and the food is not freezing then you are lacking freon in the compressor.
You need to refill the compressor, besides the freezer is 5 years old.

Take care

Only upper section of the freezer works, heavy ice-buildup.

Hi,

The symptoms you are describing are typically from a refrigerant (freon) leak. Unfortunately it will be as simple as adding new refrigerant as it will just leak out. The leak will need to be repaired. From my experience with this unit my best guess is that the evaporator coils would need replaced. An average repair cost for this type of repair would be around $400.00.

I hope this helps.
