WD 500 GB resized by Norton Ghost Restore to 120 GB and can not get it to original size.

I recently purchased a WD 500 GB eSATA HD to replace my Samsung 120 GB HD on my Dell XPS M1210. I used Norton Ghost to image my original disk and restore to the new 500 GB disk. After the restore, the new 500 GB disk only shows 120 GB available and will not resize to its original size. Tried reformatting, repartitioning etc. I appreciate any and all help/support in this regards. Thanks, Fadeaway

Walterb_8 & Geekman..Appreciate your feedback to my issue. After spending will over 40 hours, I finally discovered the real cause to my issue. I actually tried both of your suggestions in the hope of fixing the issue including formatting, repartitioning, resetting the MBR and manually editing the Partition Table. Unfortunately all these lead me back to the same results, the HD was pegged at 120 GB while physically it was meant to be 500 GB.

I then stumbled onto a thread in another forum that lead me to a wealth of information on Dell MD and the inherent HPA partition. It seems Dell has some custom code in its MBR which seems to have been copied in the cloning process. This code is triggered under certain circumstances such as when you press the MD button. Once it is pressed, the MBR triggers a series of events within the boot sectors which cause the 500 GB to be reconfigured as 120 GB where the expected HPA partition is available. The remained of the HD is then hidden and cannot be seen unless you use a specific tool.

I am attaching the page links associated with aiding me in addressing my issues and resolving it. I also want to thank all those that have contributed to the wealth of information on the subject especially the pages linked to Dan Goodell.

What you are backing up with Ghost is a mirror image of your original hard drive. You may have repartitioned the new drive for 500 gig but you’re restoring your original partition size of 120 with Ghost. That’s why they call it call it “Ghost”, it’s a ghost image of your drive. If you want to use the full capacity of the 500 gig drive you have 2 options:
1) Re-install you operating system software from scratch and install docs, pics, etc..
2) Create a second partition (500 gig minus 120 gig) and assign it a logical drive letter.

You should partition your new drive first to say 160Gb (you lose a bit after formatting) for 1st partition and the remaining capacity for the 2nd partition. Because your Ghost image is 120Gb it can only restore to a partition of 120Gb, that is why it shows 120Gb on a 500Gb on a single partition.
You may be able to fix this problem without starting again by using Disk Manager (from Control Panel - Admoinistrative Tools) to create a 2nd partition on the hard drive and format this partition.

Dead hd wd caviar 80 gb

Is the "dead" hard drive 80GB? or 500GB?
I presume you set up this hard drive as the second hard drive, or as an external drive. You can do these:
1. Disk Management (check the readablility):
Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management (please run as administrator; right click it), Disk Management. Is this hard drive info exist in this screen? If it is, then the hard drive is not dead.
Click on the hard drive info, right click, and you can do some actions (format, expand the volume, assign a drive letter, etc.)
2. If necessary, test and fix it using Norton Utilities (download and run it):

I want to upgrade a 80gb to 500gb for a dell inspiron 9400.I used norton ghost to clon it and it reduced the size of the new Hd to 80gb as the original. I tried acronis with the same result. How can I solve...

I"ll give you a fast response one way. Most extreme also is to put your os disk back in the drive which will completely empty the drive. Make sure you have drivers in a convienent location.

You can't reduce a hard drive so I suspect the norton ghost clone is 80 gb on one area of the hard drive while the other 420 is unused. Press the function keys to go into the bios or check the computer: click start /computer /right click drive and properties to see how hard drive is being used.

Don't know how to restore files from backup done with North Ghost

Using Norton Ghost 9.0 is very good program to backup your System & Documents.
You said the PC is dead then you want to restore back your System to a new PC.
All you have to do is that Norton Ghost 9.0 CD is Bootable.
Of course also your external hard drive are plug in it too.
Manually you're going to open that Sv2i file to restore back again your old system but there are some programs that are not going to use. Like for example: System Drivers (Motherboard Driver, LAN, SOUND, etc.) but at least you have the Documents and the rest of the programs run again.
I try it myself this kind of situation, I'm using Windows 2000 with Norton Ghost 9.0 version, and it's 100% works. Good luck!
Hope i might give you some tip & idea.
Tell me more about if you got a problem.
Please rate me.
Thank you.

My PCV-RX550 has 60GB, but 15 is C drive and rest on D. Most applications run on C. 1/2 D is empty. CRAZY! I want to add to the C drive side, and not disturb, e.g. loose anything. How do I do this.

Any partitioning software will allow you to alter the sizes of your 60gb drive without loosing data.
There are lots of options to choose from. Paragon software has a free version you can download:

ESATA Connection problem with My Book & my laptop w/ Vista

Had the same problem with a WD esata 1TB drive and an HP DV6 laptop. Using Vista home premium. Lots of experimentation BIOS settings and driver update, and finally fixed it by trimming back a couple of mm of the plastic shoulders on each connector of the esata cable. A few depth measurements and it became clear that the connectors weren't going in deep enough otherwise. The cable was a Belkin of reasonable quality.

No problems now, but the drive is only recognized if it's connected at boot-up.

The core of the problem is the external casing of both the laptop and the WD drive enclosure. They're thick and keep the cable connector from going in far enough. Perhaps manufacturers of the cables or the esata devices are sloppy, or the standard isn't specified well enough. I've seen pictures of esata cables that have significantly different dept.

WD Scorpio Black 320GB SATA drive

Halarious, I had the same problem yet I used norton ghost. At least you still show 160 gb. Mine went all the way to 60 gb. Here is what I had to do to reclaim the lost. I downloaded something called "Magic Boot Disk" It gave me the whole 320 back yet have not found good cloning software yet. Magic Boot Disc is freeware avaliable at http://hddguru.com/content/en/software/2006.02.10-Magic-Boot-Disk/ Good luck cloning

Western Digital WD 1200VE; 120 GB external hard drive unable to boot

You need to send it to a data recovery house like Drive Savers. The prices range from 500 to 3000 USD for data recovery and they can't guarantee 100 percent success. The platters need to be removed in a clean room and placed in a unit to read the data. They then copy the data to another drive or to optical disks. Unfortunately when the drive hit the floor the drive sustained physical damage hence not starting up.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Cheers.

How to install new HD w/o a floppy?

Hi,
Your computer should be able to handle either the 120 or 150 replacement drive. Most drives today come ready to load. Your Dell installation disk would be the best bet to install everything on the new drive. The restore disk will look for existing software and not find it. The other thing you might want to try is once you get the new disk up and running, change the pin setting on the second drive to be a slave drive and your new drive to a master with slave, and try to recover your data. If you don't have the dell install disk, a copy of Windows will also do the trick. No you don't need a floppy unless you plan on reformatting the new drive.

Hope this helps
