You can try reinstalling the drivers for the drive, and try cleaning the lens of the drive with a special cd lens cleaner.
You can also try flashing the firmware of the drive to see if that will solve the problem. To do this, first use a program like Everest to get the exact Mkae and Model of the drive that is in use. Go to that manufacturers website's download section and search for firmware for the model number you have. If its available download and run.
If these solutions do not work, you can try buying a replacement drive on ebay, because a repair of the drive itself is cost prohibitive.

CD DVD ROM doesnt read dvds when i insert the disk the light turns on i can hear the dvd turning but later on it stops. turn and stop again. then it doesnt read the dvd anymore

Hello,

how long have you been using this CD ROM? I suspect the laser (lens) of the CD ROM. I think the laser (lens) is weak that's why it cannot read data/files on DVD.

To confirm if actually its a laser problem, insert an Audio CD into the CD ROM and see if will play. If it plays, then obviously, your laser (lens) is weak. But if it doesn't play Audio CD, then it might still be the laser (lens) or a mechanism problem.

Get a lens cleaner, use it to clean the lens. If that doesn't solve the problem, get a screw driver, open the CD ROM cover so that you can gain access to the lens, use a cotton board to clean the surface of the lens. This should clean dust or dirt that might be on the lens.

If non of the above solves the problem, then know that you need to replace the laser to a brand new CD ROM.

Good luck...........

CD tray opens and shuts fine. With CD loaded and shut the screen still says NO DISK. These are disks which have always played without problem on this CD player. Is there anything I can try before taking...

When the CD player loads properly and still reads as no disk this indicates that the player lens (Optical device which reads the disk information) Is either dirty or bad. The only option you have is to get a disk lens cleaner and run it on the system. Once you run it, it is supposed to work if the lens is not spoilt. Otherwise you will just have to replace the lens by taking it to a repairer.
Hope this solution has been helpful?

Acer aspire 3690, my cd-rom will play movies, audio and some old games can be read but mostly refuses to read most of my game disks now, any ideas??

Try an external DVD drive that you can connect to your USB port. The drive you have in the laptop either has a dirty laser lens, which you can carefully clean with a "Q" and alcohol, or the laser itself may be going out. The drive can be replaced. You mentioned you have a cd-rom. If you can play movies (DVD) it is more likely a DVD drive instead of a cd-rom. CD-ROMs can only read data or music.

I cannot hear sound system play cds and videos

Every CD/DVD-ROM drive has an audio port opened. An audio cable connects to the back side of the CD/DVD-ROM and connects to the motherboard. Most MB's have two four pin audio ports, one slot white in color and a second black in color. As far as the CD/DVD-ROM not reading the disk. Make sure the disk is free from scratches; oils from you're fingers or just plain dust. Open the drawl and blow out the CD-ROM drive or buy a CD cleaner which will clean the internal laser. These days it’s hard to find a CD/DVD ROM drive with a warranty longer than 1 year. Most ppl buy a new one when it fails to read CD's.

DELL laptop does not read blank DVDs

the combo drive you listed above is a cd-rw/ DVD-ROM....meaning that it will play and burn cd, cd-r, and cd-rw disks. the dvd rom will only be able to play dvd-rom and dvd-r disks providing they are in the proper format. check that the disk in question is not a dvd-rw or (+2) disk. the drive will not recognize that a disk is in the drive if the disk isnt compatable. try a dvd movie, if that works then a dvd-r, if that works then try a dvd-rw +1. if the last option doesnt work then you will have to stick with the dvd-rom and dvd-r, or purchase a dvd-rw drive to install.

GOOD LUCK AND DONT FORGET TO RATE MY POST!! :D

My cd-rom won't read the disk that i am putting in.

If you have a can of air, blow it softly into the cd-rom to make sure dust isn't causing the laser to act weird. Then try a couple of different cd's to be sure and if the problem still exists, then the cd-rom is bad and it will have to be replaced.

Having a trouble with my DVD-ROM - IBM ThinkPad T42

Internal the pickup assy. (the laser) there are three components that read the discs, one for DVD one for CD and one for the DVD-ROM its likely that the DVD-ROM laser has gone out. Take the drive out and get the part number and look it up online on ebay or the like :-)
