Hi, do you have a complete instructions or step by step on how to reformat my dell gx280 unit? My google fingers, are stiff today.(INOP)
That GX280 is today 14 years old and came new with XP right>
still stuck at XP? if yes, doom is all there is.
XP is (as you learned) a huge virus magnet.(worse every day)
some were built with windows 2000, win2k, hopeless extreme...
windows xp recovery or restore fails because sure the recover software is corrupted and infected too, so erasing HDD is the only path as your discovered. (page 30 in your manual at dell will fail)
but not the dell disk install same page.
BTW , ive never seen an XP PC not infected, ever..... so..... bingo.
.
ever google.?
older post but and others will find this useful.
There are many pitfalls to OS installs I will bullet them.
then install your unstated OS
why even post lacking that key fact
if w7 is the answer
then know this.
getting the ISO file from MS>
you must have valid retails license or better
your Dell COA key for w7 will not even allow the download at ms.com
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software...
but if w10 it does, allow it
and allows you to run it on any machine for 30day trail, but not w7.
The w10 is best to do first. in all cases.
but not 64bit , 64 bit fresh loaded w10 has
huge restrictions,
BIOS compatible.
Intel CORE generation 6 or newer (i5-6xxx) example.
2007 and newer PC
but 32bit can load on some older machines.
or google,
now to installed Fresh Windows 7
1 gazillion hits.
learn that steps will vary,
for sure using the 1000s of different bios used.
The USB install is best and most fast.
(there are faster ways sure but are complex)
we install the ISO to the USB stick using RUFUS(free)
and boot the stick and install w7
getting to this point, boot,
varies by ever PC ever made.
some cant even to uSB boots.
You can also burn a DVD-R disk with free Imgburn.
and boot that.http://imgburn.com/index.php?act=downloa...
never install XP ever, nor VISTA ever.
Vista is better but has no repair /recovery agents on board, so stinks for that. big time.
OP failed top stated form factor, if SSF oops
RUN W10 FIRST, ITS FREE TO TRY
AND FREE TO DOWNLOAD, AT MS.
Intel Pentium 4 540 / 3.2 GHz
Is yours with P4?
small form-factor computer: 2 GB (OOPS)
small desktop computer: 4 GB
desktop computer: 4 GB
small mini-tower computer: 4 GB
mini-tower computer: 4 GB
window 10 32bit will load on 2gb otpiplex
if it likes your version of BIOS.(opgrade it)
and if it likes that P4, It may.
Im told some do load.
but the SSF will not be good.
SSF will love to run out of ram and do disk swaps. (vertual memory)
best is above SFF PCs,totally,
buy used running w10 Optiplex.
sold dirt chip loaded with w10
like this, 780 , 64bit, wins here.

Before you do anything there is a free virus program called AVG. It is very powerful and will work on any system. Just google Free AVG and download it. Run it and see if it at least quarantines the virus.
Second option is to get a disk cleaning software. I use Disk Scrubber. Backup your personal files like docs, favorites, etc. Use the Disk Clean to wipe everythng off of your drive, then reload...that will take care of it.You can download the AVG software and run it again to make sure.
Yes, there are Terminate and Stay (TSR) viruses that copy themselves into memory and infect everything. Since it is in memory, disk cleaning does not do any good. For more information on those google TSR.boot virus. Good luck and let me know how it works out.
Don't forget to vote on this solution before you log out.
SOURCE: DELL 0PTIPLEX GX280 DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE CD DRIVE
Sounds like a bad drive. But if it was me I would open the case and check to see if all cables are snug in there place (ofcourse make sure it's unplugged from power). I have seen EIDE's work them self's loose just enough to make a hard drive or CD/DVD not work. Good luck.

SOURCE: Green LED on Dell Inspiron Desktop 530 - all OK?
Yes, on most desk top the green light in the back tells you that you have power to the cpu. Even though the unit is off it is telling you that the current supply is still there. This is a good feature if you move your unit as soon as you plug it in you know if the outlet is on or not.
