This could be one of several different problems. The MOST common cause of complaints of characters appearing in a black box in center of screen that we see @ my service center is due to customer having the "text" option of the closed-captioning feature enabled (often, inadvertently; navigating the on-screen menus and employing the multiple feature options of modern TV's can be problematic for even the most well-versed of us!); the user can readily tell if this is the source of the complaint by noting whether the characters displayed change from channel to channel, as they will if the display in question is simply the text function of closed-captioning. It is also possible that the display is an indication of the unit being in the "service mode", which is a feature employed by service technicians in diagnosing & repairing the set. More descriptive information on exactly what is being displayed---i.e., the size of the box being seen, exactly what characters are shown, etc.---would be helpful in determining just what this problem is about...perhaps p2412 could post a picture of what is being displayed?

Black rectangle

Unusual for a DVD player---Usually in a TV it means that in the closed caption area it is set to TEXT--cable and some sat boxes have this also.

If find set to TEXT you will have a black box in middle of screen--set it to off.

I have a black square box that resides in the middle of the picture. It is not the closed caption...is the TV toast or is there a chip replacement or some other fix that is not cost prohibative?

I would recheck the cc and make sure it is OFF. It has to be set to TEXT for the black box to be in the MIDDLE of the screen. Also make sure the MUTE is not on. There is nothing else that I know of that would generate a box in the middle of the screen, any other problems would knock out an entire section of the screen.

Large black box appears in center of screen with date and other numbers on it. Push any button and it goes away for short time

You can try resetting the television controls by unplugging the television from the power source for a few hours. This means physically removing the power plug form the source of power. This may allow the controls to reset out of the latching position they are in now. If this does not help, you are having a problem with the main board. This board is master control for all the televisions functions, like audio, video and switching controls. You can call the Insignia customer support at this telephone number. 1-877-467-4289. Give them the model number of your television and ask them how you can find service for it. You can also use the customer support website. www.insignia-products.com. go to the customer support section and ask them for help with your problem. I hope this information helps you with your problem.

Black box in middle of screen

It's a text box for either closed captioning or demonstration mode. Go into the setup menu and turn off closed captioning. If you have trouble doing that, then just restore factory settings.

Most likley this is text captioning has been turned on. Go into your caption settings and make sure they are all turned off. Let me know if this takes care of you.
