Lens error message on nikon coolpix L18 I purchased my Nikon L18 Cool Pix camera last September ('08). Last week when I turned it on, the lens extended fully, then retracted fully as I got a "lens error" message.'' PLEASE HELP! I don't want to replace this camera so soon.

Sounds like the memory card in the camera has gone bad, or the camera has glitched. Try replacing the card. If it still does it, the cam has issues.

From the manual: "Turn the camera off and then on again. If the error persists, contact retailer or Nikon-authorized service representative."

Try jiggling the lens. Use compressed air to blow out any grit around the lens barrel. If that doesn't do it, you'll need to get the camera serviced.

Answer Having a "System Error" or "Lens Error" message displayed on the camera's LCD monitor would generally indicate that your camera needs servicing. A System Error is a general error which can be caused by many things: lens problem, CF Card problem, general camera failure, etc. To troubleshoot, please try the following:

1. Use the memory card that originally came with your camera (or a Nikon approved card).
2. Remove and replace the battery.

On the other hand, a Lens Error generally means that an error has occured during the lens operation. To troubleshoot, please try the following:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove and replace the battery.
3. Turn on the camera.

Seems you may just have to remove and replace the battery - sort of like a Windows Restart to fix a computer problem! - this would reset your camera's memory.
