On our Kenmore Coldspot Model 71182100, water is leaking from freezer compartment into the refrigerator compartment and it turns to ice on the top shelf. If you put anything close to the back vent of the frig it will freeze up. I also notice ice crystals on all the food in the freezer compartment. The fan turns on more than usual and it makes a strange whining noise when running.
Kenmore Coldspot Model 611821100 - drain hole at rear of freezer freezes over with frozen water. Ice sheet forms on bottom of freezer compartment. Melting water dripping into refrigerator and making mess. I chip away ice freeze-over and thaw drain with hot water. Problem re-occurs within a week or two.

That water is from the melting frost of the automatic defrost cycle. Their is drain in the freezer behind the back wall under the evaperator coil that is blocked, so instead of defrost water draining it's pooling in the freezer or in some case espically on models with the freezer on the top,the water is leaking from the freezer vents into the fresh food compartment. The way to clear the drain is remove back plate and remove all ice build up and GENTLY make a small hole in drain, then totally flush w/warm water. The exact location of drain is under the coil behind back freezer plate in the center

I have a Kenmore Coldspot Model #69207990 and have the same problem. Water from the freezer drains into the refridgerator onto the shelves and sheets of ice form. A repairman pointed out that the tube leading down from the freezer onto the drain pan was frozen. By pouring hot water down the tube, he reopened this drain line. Problem solved for six months and the drain line froze again. My question is how to stop this drain line from freezing up again.
Check to see if your refer has a climate controll ie: humidity setting, some models of refers swet when the humidity is high, if it doesn't have this setting turn your freezer setting down alittle. GL hope this helps.
Most likely whats happening is you have a frozen drain for the defrost cycle. here are step by step instrutions for repair:
Unplug refrigerator
unload food from freezer
remove icemaker if present (there are 3 screws remove the one on the bottom and loosen the 2 on top of icemaker then lift it off the 2 screws unplug from wiring harness)
remove 2 screws holding rear cover in place
move cover to the side or remove from unit altogether
defrost any and all ice from bottom of freezer and aluminum drain pan that is now exposed
flush drain hole that you will see once ice is cleared with warm water. (sometimes I use a large syringe or turkey baster to forcefully flush hot water thru the drain tube)
reassemble in reverse order
Post bak if you have any questions and I'll gladly help you out Thanks Peyton
I have the exact same Kenmore and exact same model #77292798. It's the top freezer model with ice maker. Here's what I did:
Empty everything in the freezer.
Turn water to ice maker off from source behind unit.
Remove bottom panel (two screws)
Every screw in the freezer is the exact same size. I used a screwdriver style socket and, I think
this works the best.
Remove ice maker (4 screws) and unplug from socket.
Remove rear panel (2 screws).
My freezer was loaded with ice underneath the bottom panel. The ice scraped away easily. There is a tin pan underneath the coils that drains toward the middle where the drain hole is. Again, my freezer was full of ice beneath this tin pan and, I had to scrape away. You may be tempted to try and remove the coil because it would be easier to get to drain hole. I tried this and, it did no good. Don't try it. Once all the ice was scraped away, I realized that the drain hole was plugged with ice. I used boiling hot water and used a squeeze bottle to pour the hot water into the drain hole. I then wrapped a paper towel around a thin screwdriver and used that to soak up the now cold water in the drain hole. After doing this a dozen times or so, the drain finally cleared.
Then, reassemble. This was a much easier task than I thought it would be and, will take care of it much quicker next time.
