Yes a CV joint could cause it. Look under the car with someone putting it in gear. If any of the shafts are turning it is a joint if not the diff in the transmission is gone. Good luck.

Riding mower no longer moves.

If this is a hydrostatic transmission, one of 3 things:
1. Drive belt off pulleys (recommend replace belt if so)
2. Belt broken (obviously, replace)
3. Hydrostatic transmission failed (least likely, but this is an expensive repair shop issue if so)

This happened to my GT1554 two weeks ago - fortunately, replacing the belt resolve the problem.

Transmission problem on my 2001 dodge caravan

Not good if it makes a grinding noise. Needs a tech or replacement as something most likely has come loose inside the transmission.

Sound like a transmission problem or at the very least a differential problem. The only way to know for sure is to have it looked at by a pro.

MTD 42 inch hydrostatic drive lawnmower

1...first and foremost check the fluid level and top off with mobil 1 full synthetic 20w50 oil,
2...check the the engine pulley for wear
3...check idler arm spring tention.
inside yout transmission is a center pump section and swash plates and a set of 6-8 pistons , if dirt is allowed into the transmission it causes severe wear to these parts

my recomendation would be to dissasemble the transmission and inspect the pump center section and swash plates for wear....look for tiny scratches on the bearing surfaces, if it is worn then replace parts as needed. these worn parts will cause the transmission to "growl" or as you say "grind"

Sudden noise, whining in 1st gear, reverse jerky

Sounds like your final drive pin in your differential broke causing the main spider pin to tear through the case.Catastropic damage.Check for severe fluid leak under car.If no signs of leaks, check dipstick for greyish blk colored fluid. If this is the case you will need to replace transaxle & flush trans cooler.hope this helps

The clutch assembly seems to be at fault. Either its worn-out or has to be readjusted(reset). This noise indicates improper transmission of power from the machine to the wheels and since this has automatic gears, it should rectified at the earliest...sodeep
