Even with new batteries, camera says change batteries. It powers up on the preview side mode for about half a second then goes off again.
Is the lens not coming out at all? did you check is the lens is blocked somehow?
When a mechanical problem occurs, this can be a trigger for the camera to shut down, before something becomes (more) damaged. Did something happen the last time you used the camera?
Was the camera switched of for a very long time?

to make a battery hot some short circuit has to be there u can check it by connecting a wire to both ends of a battery and te battery will become hot in a minute . it is because when electrons get a easy wasy to travel from negative to positive it will travel in a great speed and due to this speed it will collide with other electrons and will make the battery or wire hot . this is the same principal of a fuse wire also when lot of current passes through a wire it gets hot and will be burned]] i think u have got the idea how a batter can get hot if u put the battery in the wrong side also this can happen to ur camera and if there is a short circuit or a wrong battery can also make it hot so check the manuel to find wich type of battery is needed for the camera

Well, I haven't used a Canon PowerShot SD790 IS Digital Camera before, but I want to suggest this: before you start thinking of putting your camera apart, try to clean the battery terminals and the battery contacts of the camera with clean white paper, then reinsert the pack. Please be very careful when doing this so that you do not break or bend the contacts or terminals; they are usually delicate material.
