It means the message saved to your SIM card, not your phone.

My home screen shows a flashing envelope icon even though my sim contacts memory is nowhere near full

This icon indicates that the SIM card's own text message storage is full. This doesn't actually cause problems on the 5800 because it stores its messages in the phone's own memory, but the envelope can look a bit annoying.
To get rid of the flashing envelope:

1. On the standby screen press the white menu button.

2. Select "Messaging"

3. Select "Options"

4. Select "SIM Messages"

5. Delete some or all of the messages from the SIM messages folder using the Options menu.

Deleting text messages

Ok, here is what you do to delete your messages in the inbox:

1. First you press your messages button where they are located
2. Now scroll down to where it says Inbox and make sure it is highlighted
3. Next press the button that looks like two pieces of papers one on top of the other...it is next to the OK button in the middle but on the left side.
4. Next you will see something that says Setup...press OK
5. Scroll down to where it says Cleanup press OK and you will see Inbox and Sent Items on there. Choose your Inbox ( you can also do the same for sent items)
6. Now just choose how often or how many messages you want cleaned up...then press the OK button.
7. It will automatically ask you if you want to do this now...choose yes

Now your inbox has fewer or no messages...

Have a blessed Day!

Text Message

Go to messages and to the left it says "inbox" and to the right it should say one of the following....Received, message type, subject or from. click on that... Then choose one of the options..

RECEIVED: Let's you sort the messages by the date you received them either last ones first or new ones first. To change which order you just have to hit received twice. Then scroll up to the top with the bar to the right.

FROM: Let's you sort messages by the sender. For example all "tony's" messages will be together and all "sally's" messages will be together.

SUBJECT: It will sort your messages according to what they say. For example if you have two messages that start with "I'm not home" they will be grouped together. It puts all the messages in alphabetical order no matter the date time or sender,

MESSAGE TYPE; Ok this one is a little tricky. This one sorts your picture messages together, your sim messages together and regular text messages together. They may be in alphabetical order too.

Now if you would like your newest messages first this is what you can do. Hit received and make sure your at the top of your messages (if not scroll up) and if the newest message is the first one there. Your all set. If not repeat the process and then scroll up (assuming you have a lot of texts). Let me know if I helped!
