My freezer had a ton of ice in the bottom. when it defrosts it seems to all drain to the bottom and refreezes. There's never anything in the pan underneath the freezer.

The subject is a Eureka Model 350 hand held steamer that can be found at Lowes and other places for around $49.95.
With this steamer you can thaw out an evaporator as quick as if you were using a heat gun or hair dryer but without the slightest concern about melting plastic or wiring. By using steam instead of pouring water (yes many still do) there is little to clean up. With the many attachments it comes with there are other uses (i.e. cleaning, thawing drains, thawing IDI fill tubes, etc.). The steam also makes the replacement IDI fill tube (rubber end) more pliable and easier to complete the installation when used at the end.
This unit has a trigger and can be used to blow out a stopped up drain on a refrigerator by letting the pressure build up a little then blow through the drain with one of the attachments. As for thawing out evaporators it had a fine jet tip for actually CUTTING through solid ice.
Another great use for this tool is refrigerator door gaskets. The hot steam works faster than a heat gun with out the worry.
Note: Do not aim steam directly onto the plastic freezer liner. The rapid temperature change could damage the liner.

Your drain line is clogged. Take a small diameter pice of wire and snake out the drain line from inside the freezer.
You may have to access the back rear near the compressor and separate the drain line there and clean it further.

The excess frost in those areas is probably caused by leaky door gasket seals. They should be tight enough to hold a dollar bill securely all the way around. A defrost problem would start on the coils behind the back cover inside the freezer and would also appear on the back wall before it did on the door edges.

IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE DEFINITE ISSUE WITH YOUR COMPRESSOR, IT MAY BE CONSTANTLY RUNNING OR RUNNING TOO OFTEN, THIS WOULD CAUSE THE LARGE AMOUNT OF HEAT COMING FORM THE BOTTOM. IF YOUR COMPRESSOR IS RUNNING TOO MUCH YOU WILL ALSO GET AN EXCESS AMOUNT OF WATER EVAPORATING DUE TO CONDENSATION ON THE EVAPORATOR COILS THEREFORE FILLING UP YOUR DRAIN PAN THAT MUCH QUICKER. YOUR FRIDGES COMPRESSOR MAY BE ON THE WAY OUT BUT YOUR FRIDGE SOUNDS LIKE IT'S WORKING THE WAY IT SHOULD BE.HOPE THIS HELPS
