I used 0178 to program my universal remote. You can also try 10056, 10178,10864,10885,11756,10056,11758, and 11499. Then you can try by dropping the "1" from the front of these codes.
Most good remotes have a programming function if this does not work, where the remote will "learn" the proper code.

sounds like you might have PIP turned one (picture in picture) .. if there is no input hooked up for the PIP . you will just get a black screen ... you should be able to move that PIP around and change its size .. indeed turn it off .. look for a menu item called PIP .. select PIP off ..

Sharp's are known for weaker flyback transformers. Odds are you need one too. Not a DIY project unless you have experience in electronics. Best bet might be to Recycle this unit and invest into another unit. Keep your eye open for garage sales too.
