When I turn it on, we get an 'e' on the screen and down to bottom says 'press F2 to setup'. If I press nothing, it eventually goes to a black screen and the cursor is at the top left, but not blinking - I cannot type anything. If I press F2 I get to the setup, I set that to 'default settings', but still nothing. Have taken battery out for 5 minutes, re-inserted and still nothing! Help!
If you have a disk in the dvd, remove it and try to start. If that fails press F8 while starting and see if you can start in safe mode. If that fails , you will need to insert an operating system disk , and when you get the disk info loaded on the screen, type fixmbr . Hopefully one of these will work
There might be one step you could try to restore the system to factory specifications. When you turn the laptop on, and you see the Acer splash screen, press the Alt-F10 keys together at the same time, and this should hopefully bring the Acer eRecovery system up, provided that your computer has the built-in recovery partition. If it asks for a password, try using the default of "000000". If that doesn't work, then a password has been entered into the system, and there is no way to reset it, however there is a way to find out what the password is, however it does require the use of the Ubuntu Operating System (which is free to download, here)

Hold the power button down and let it fully power off then boot it back up. If you get a prompt saying Windows did not shut down normally, select Last Known Good Configuration.

That blinking cursor is the way in which the BIOS is telling you that Windows is missing - its most critical, core files have been corrupted beyond repair. The only thing you can do is to reinstall using the recovery cd or your own Windows install disk.
