I have owned a Canon PowerShot A560 for 15 months and have used it without problem until one month ago. With no precipitating event, noticed that when using the zoom, the display would suddenly go dark, even in conditions of bright sunlight. The photos are dark as well. At first I thought it was related to the position of the sun, but it happens regardless of the location of the sun. I have changed all the settings I can think of but it makes no difference. Is this a common problem with these cameras? Is there anything else I can try?

This is a common problem with S1 IS and it is caused by faulty CCD sensor. Note that you can playback captured images without any problem but in capture mode all you get is blank screen. Will have to go to Canon but note that Canon repairs these models free of charge when it is the CCD sensor that stops working.

As a solution I highly recommend that you forego the old cable to the camera route, and instead consider a card reader to download your photos to your computer. Card readers are very inexpensive, much much faster downloading photos from the camera, do not use the camera's batteries during download, and are much less prone to file corruption of the photos during the download.
You place the camera's card in the reader, and your computer sees it as a hard drive. You simply copy/paste or drag/drop your photos onto your hard drive. For all of these reasons, most professional photographers utilize card readers exclusively. Really, you'll save yourself a lot of headache. Here are some examples from Amazon. Also, don't be fooled by the cost. some of the cheap ones work just fine. Go by the reviews. Also make sure you get a reader that is stated capable of reading your card (particularly if you have an SDHC card):

For international readers, here's another source for card readers (free international shipping too :-)

You can change the ISO setting also to Auto. If you have the advanced guide (see pp 80, 107).
Press the ISO button it will switch from various ISO setting to AUTO.
Do remember in Bright light , a lower ISO number like 80 will give you very fine images, while as the light level goes down, the ISO number will change to a higher number and the image will become more grainer.
I hope I could answer to your query.
