No sw reception - Sony ICF-SW7600 AM/FM/SW Radio

It depends on your location. Set reception mode to AM waves. Dial in the frequency of the station or enter it using the keypad. To tune in on a station, rotate the radio.

The SW FET preamp transistor, Q1, on the underside of the circuit board blows if a static electric discharge hits the whip antenna. In my case, a cat rubbing against me & the radio on a very dry winter day did it in. The back & circuit board has to be removed to get at it. The micro transistor & the solder connection are very tiny, so hard to replace. The antenna jack should still work, because the preamp is only for the whip antenna's SW reception. An easier solution would be to just run a wire from the antenna jack to the whip antenna, but you would no longer have the whip's preamp benefits, or just use a longwire antenna connected to the jack for SW. Also beware plugging into the jack disables the AM ferrite antenna inside, so you might not want anything plugged into it for AM reception because the internal ferrite seems to perform better than any external antenna.

If you are experiencing bad or NONE AM (MW) reception ,if your receiver has an external antenna connection point here is the solution... It should also have a ground connection as it is rare such a point does not accompany an external antenna connection.
The problem with MW reception is the vast frequency range of the MW band as" 540-1760kHz "
means nighttime fade out, and even heavy static and distortion..( less than SW )
in order to receive a station on LW and MW bands you need to have a "Loop Antenna " that normally supplied by manufacturer..if you cant locate it ,you can buy it in any electronic store..it is a very cheap accessory..additionally both LW and MW works good in daytime with powerful radio stations in your vicinity ..espacially LW..not much stations on these days..except in Europa..MW works better and more stations come after sunset ..
SW band is a little bit different.if you really want to listen SW in depth ,and if your receiver has multiple SW bands as well ,you then need special SW antenna to be attached to your receiver..otherwise it is not worth to listen it due to heavy static and distortion on the band..,unless you want it..just for testing and to see what is available in your area pls attack a plain wire (about 1 meter ) to ext antenna plug and try to search it..if you desire to learn shortwave -Listen To The World please visit the URL below.

SW transmission depends on an atmospheric layer called the ionosphere. The density of ionized atoms present in the layer is dependent on the light from the sun and on solar activity. The rule of thumb is to tune in to the larger meter bands ( 49m, 41 m, 31m, 25m ) in the evening and at night and the shorter meter (31m, 25, 21, ...16, 10) bands in the day.

To tune in to a particular signal you need to know the exact frequency and the broadcast time. You can search the Internet for the frequencies of a particular radio station and the times when that station is broadcasting in direction of your region.

With old radios it worked to connect the antenna to some central radiator or (metallic) water pipe. Some old wire was used to connect it;

Look at the front case and locate reset hole. Insert cocktale stick or similar and listen for slight click. Insert new batteries, ensuring correct polarity and that there has been no leakage from old batteries on terminals. If leakage ie green/ uneven appearance, try to scrape clean with suitable implement when disconnected from mains only.

humming? as in 60 cycle hum or no signal hum?

Turn on the radio and turn the AM/SW BAND switch to the AM position. MW appears in the display. Use the outer ‘fast’ tuning knob to find stations, fine tuning with the inner ‘slow’ knob
when needed.

• If there is interference from adjacent stations, place the BAND WIDTH control in the NARROW position. If there is no interference, leave it in the WIDE position.

• If there is excess background noise, turn on
the SW LPF switch, which may minimize the noise.

• If a station is so strong that audio distortion occurs, reduce the gain level with the AM/SW RF GAIN control knob by turning it counterclockwise.

• The telescopic antenna does not have to be extended for AM reception. The radio has an internal, directional, ferrite-bar antenna for AM reception.

• To optimize AM reception, swivel the radio until maximum signal strength is achieved.

All of that being said: It's very tough nowadays to receive AM in this 2008 electronic world. If your able install a longwire SW antenna outside, and have access to a good earth ground, you can boost the AM signals and beat the noise being generated all around you.
