Is it possible for a sock to be eaten by a front loader washer, I did not see it in the rubber gasket on front but I had 2 socks to go missing over the weekend and I washed a load of clothes after going to bed and when I woke up the laundry room smelled like burnt rubber and the wet clothes did too and the first thing I thought was those socks may have gottne stuck some where but I don't see how they can.
Right on!
Thank you so much for the help!!!!

Metal inside washer drum may be faulty and causing tearing of clothes (run your finger around the inside when empty and you will feel where it snags). Had same problem, only got worse and ruined many expensive t-shirts! Replacement of drum is required and is extremely costly if not under warranty!

I had the same problem. Have you cleaned the filter under the front panel? Simply remove the three screws holding the panel below the door and remove the 2" white screwcap. Be sure to have a basin handy to catch the water. (possibly a couple of gallons if the stainer is really clogged) I suspect you'll find several moldy items that are causing the odor. Good luck.

The belt could be worn and will be slipping on the pullys, as it spins up the rubber , rubs against the pullys and that is what creats the burning rubber smell, the belt needs replacing.

SOURCE: Musty smell
I had this same problem and it drove my crazy. It turned out to be a buildup of fabric softener gunk under the automatic fabric softener dispenser. If you have not done so, I recommend you remove the dispenser and check under it to look for residue...most likely it is there. This residue creates the most God awful odor that I refuse to even use the dispenser anymore...it's the good old Downy Ball for me.
I hope this works for you, as I know this situation is very irritating.
