I plugged it into the charger and all of a sudden a white screen with a battery with a red line through it came on the screen. I took the battery out and put it into an older blackberry handset I have and it works fine so what is the problem?
Slam the phone on a hard surface to get rid of dust in the connections. I suggest tile or cement.
Blackberries and batteries can produce mysterious symptoms sometimes. Although your battery works in other blackberries you may still suffer from a broken battery. Try other (charged) batteries in your Blackberry e.g. from a friend's blackberry. If your blackberry fails to start up with any (charged) battery you have a logic board issue. There is a Blackberry Repair Guide that shows how to open a Blackberry and replace the logic board yourself. Once it is open it's as easy as taking the broken logi board off the front assembly and installing a new one, the parts are available on ebay. There are also third party blackberry repair services that will do this for you.

this is a moisture detector. when the battery is exposed to water, the red 'x' will bleed off and make the sticker appear pink.
