Check whether the closed caption function is turned ON. If it is ON, make it OFF. Press the button marked "CC" on the remote control, once to delete it.

I do know that on Zenith CRT televisions of the 1990's this will happen and all I did to fix it is to go to the menu and turn the text feature off. This may be true with your Sharp as well.
Hi,
most times a black rectangle pops up when closed captioning is on. sometimes there will be gibberish in it sometimes not. See if you have button on remote labeled "CC" . Also if you have a cable or sat box make sure closed captioning is switched off there too.
If it is a large black rectangle that blots out the middle of the screen then you need to check your CC (closed caption) setting. Make sure the closed caption is turned off. I'm not up to date on the newer sets, but a lot of the older ones had more than one CC setting. One setting ran the captioning across the bottom, another put it in a big black box in the center of the screen. Most places didn't support the full text so all that showed was a big black rectangle on the screen. Since I'm not sure exactly what your rectangle looks like, this is my best estimate of your problem. Hope this helps.
