SOURCE: blank screen long beep 2 short beeps at startup.

The 1 long 2 short beep code means a problem in the video circuitry and the laptop can't initialize the display. This is usually caused by failure of the integrated video chipset. Unfortunately, on a laptop you can't just open the case and install a new video card like you can on a desktop. You need to replace the mainboard. Replacements are available online. Here is one source found by a Google search. (I'm just using this as an example. I haven't dealt with this site.)

The 4 beep code means no memory detected when the computer started up. No surprise there since you had taken it out.

SOURCE: one long beep and 2 short beeps

Depending upon your BIOS manufacturer, generally this POST error code means either a video card problem or a motherboard problem. If the RAM is OK then you have a motherboard problem, and this may not be cost effective to fix. Consider putting your money towards a new laptop, remove the hard disk and put it into an external USB adapter case and use it as an USB hard drive for backup etc.

SOURCE: HP Pavilion dv1000: hard-drive wont load OS

The arm that controls the head has malfunctioned. Your hard drive is probably toast. The more you run it though the more chance you have of not being able to recover the data on it. I have a Tip and Trick for trying to recover some of the data. You can read it here.
Please share it with your friends.

Hi, I have upgraded my HP Pavilion DV1000 RAM to 2G PC2700 DDR 333MHz, but after turning on it just makes 4 short beeps and screen is not turned on, please help me fix this error.

4 Short beeps would indicate during POST (Power on Self Test) there is a initialization issue with added hardware. The DIMM you added may not be compatible, or installed in the correct order.
1. Remove new memory completely, and see if machine starts
2. If you have original memory module still installed, remove it and try new one by itself.
3. If that works, put newer larger module in the 1st slot, and move original in second slot, and try again.

The system can automatically adjust memory settings (speed and timing) itself from the SPD module on every stick of RAM. However if the settings are drastically different, it can cause problems. Generally it will run as fast as the slowest module, but now always, sometimes causing the slower module to be attempted to run out of spec and cause boot issues or system instability.

Good luck!

Unit will not start only gives 3 Beeps

Seems like it could be a memory problem, replacing the RAM or checking to the if it seated correctly would be the best thing to do.
If you have an AMIBIOS.

  • Three beeps means there has been a base memory read/write test error. Replacing the RAM usually solves this AMI beep code.
If you have AwardBIOS.
  • Any other beep code pattern you hear means that there has been some kind of memory problem. Replacing your RAM is the most you'll need to do to fix this problem.
Try looking at this for some new and faster RAM ddr-333mhz-4-ibm-lenovo-thinkpad-t42-pentium/q/sellerid/18914987/loc/101/219856812.html">http://www.buy.com/prod/1gb-memory-upgrade-pc2700-ddr-333mhz-4-ibm-lenovo-thinkpad-t42-pentium/q/sellerid/18914987/loc/101/219856812.html

I have this ASUS P4GE-MX Motherboard. I want to upgrade my ram from DDR 256 MB TO DDR 1 GB. For temporary purpose, I tried another 256 DDR ram with 400 MHZ, but I had some problem with booting my system....

Hello, The Motherboard's specifications mention that it uses DDR Ram, while the FSB runs at 400MHz. That means that any kind of DDR memory will work up to the maximum of 2 GB (it has 2 slots, so it's up to the max of 2x1GB DDR sticks).
There's no issue with the speed, actually the faster you can get the better results you will have. Try looking for 1GB DDR 400MHz (preferably two of them, if you want to max out the capacity and since it's kind of cheap to do so).
The one you tried and didn't work, might be due to a faulty RAM module.

RAM upgrade is not working

A 200-pin PC-3200 SODIMM should work in your machine but it will clock down to 333MHz. Your computer has 2 slots with a max of 512MB per slot (1GB total system memory). For maximum compatibility you should stick with a low density (16-chip - double-sided) PC2700 DDR-333 SODIMM with a CL of 2.5. Link below to see an example:
