I do know there is a set of bearings on the drum drive shaft. There is an inner and an outer. Some places mention that these bearings are no longer available. However, I found on ebay a gentlemen who sells these bearing and the seals in a kit for about $80.00. It comes with instructions on how to repair and will save a lot of money. I have done this once already to the same washer, now I am doing it again. If you search on ebay maytag neptune parts you will find his listing for a bearing kit. He also describes the jet engine noise.

Your maytag is really an amana and the bearings are bad. Yes it does cost a lot. If i were you i would buy another washer. Get a whirlpool. (whirlpool now owns maytag)

two problems here,
your shaft seal is running on its last leg
the sound is unmistakeable and always described the same...
the water issue, you probably have a trickle leak through the cold water valve
the mixing valve is quite an easy repair, but I would have to say with all honesty, it probably time for a new machine
the hub seal is a tub replacment call
2 hrs of labor if hes good
and the tub runs around 500.00 dollars
sory for the bad news
