Leather cord coming out of zoom barrel on sigma 28-200

Sigma 28-200 was not zooming or focusing. Looked like something was scratching the barrel. Upon further investigation, a leather-like cord seemed to be stuck inside. I tried pulling it out; now the lens zooms and focuses. Where did this cord come from? Was it original to the construction? Or did it somehow get wrapped around and stuck in there?

That cord may have been a gasket for sealing the lens from dirt.

SOURCE: trouble focusing with sigma 70-300 DL macro super lens

It will not focus on anything closer than 5 feet.

(From Sigma lens literature)
Capable of macro photography, this lens has a 1:2 maximum close-up magnification at the 300 mm focal length. It's the ideal high performance lens for portraits, sports photography, nature photography, and other types of photography that frequently use the telephoto range. It also has a switch for changeover to macro photography at focal lengths between 200mm and 300mm with a maximum close-up magnification from 1:2.9 to 1:2. The minimum focusing distance is 1.5m / 59 in. at all zoom settings.

SOURCE: There is a tarnish to the eye of the lens Sigma Zoom 20-200mm

From your picture it is impossible to tell if the blemish is on the rear element or internal. The first thing I would do is clean the external lens surfaces then take some pictures. You may find that the blemish has no effect on picture quality. If that is the case, I would do nothing.

If it does affect your photographs, you will need to take it to a camera repair man. What ever you do, do not attempt to disassemble the lens yourself. You will not be able to get it back together and only add to the cost of repair. As far as cost, that is up to the camera repair man you choose. Without looking at the lens, he will not be able to give you an estimate. Check the cost of repair against the replacement value of the lens on E-bay and then make your decision.

SOURCE: My Sigma APO 70-200mm f/2.8 HSM lens functions

Am having the same problem. I fixed it once but can't remember how I did it. I think there are screws under the mounting ring -which has four screws itself. Then, I think under the green computer board, there are other screws that should be tightened... I will look at mine tomorrow and come back here to report.

Sigma 17-50 2.8 EX HSM lens is stuck and won't zoom. It takes pictures Ok and sometimes it even focuses in automatic. I can also take pictures without zooming. Can someone help on how to fix.

Hi.
Probably the problem come from a loose screw inside zoom cylinder. Normally it happens due to constant use or vibration.
The GMR sensor is very sensitive to magnetized tools an needs an accurate position to function properly.
If you don´t have experiencie with this electronic systems, it is better you to contact Sigma Service in Ronkonkoma, N.Y.

The lens does not focus manually or automatically.

Hi.
I have a lot of experiencie repairing Sigma lens.
In this zoom 150-500, the problem is located at the focus mechanism. This is a rear-focus lens so the focus mechanism is close to the bayonet.
It is not very hard to repair, but is better if you send to a Sigma Service Station.
Normally the mechanism is stuck due to a fall or strong punch.

I have the sigma 70-300mmD i just bought for my nikon D40 and i am having trouble with the auto focus. it will not autofocus can anyone tell me what i am doing wrong and or where i can download the...

The Nikon D40 does not have an autofocus motor, relying on the lens having one. This Sigma lens does not have such a motor, relying on the camera having one. Nikon designates lenses with an autofocus motor AF-S, Sigma calls theirs HSM.
