My parents moved house at the weekend. They have a Samsung LCD TV LE26R51BDX which they used to use exclusively for watching Virgin cable 9 [via a scart lead obviously].
In their new home, they do not yet have cable or Sky. ''No problem'' I said, ''we will just connect it to analogue and/or Freeview through the rooftop aerial''. However, although I am 99% sure that I have followed all the correct menu controls:-
1. The TV picture is just really fuzzy black & white images [although it is picking up faint images & audio].
2. The DTV [Freeview] option just states that there is no signal.
I know that the problem is not the aerial or the cable because I substituted the Samsung LCD with a small portable TV and tuned in the analogue channels in seconds with super clear picture & audio.
Lastly, although I am not certain it is relevant, they purchased the TV from PC World [as a monitor???].
I am usually pretty techno savvy, so this has been a real puzzle. Any ideas would be really appreciated [and would save my reputation as the family IT guru].
Thanks.

SOURCE: Unable to Tune TV to Sky + RF output
Hi.
The problem is that the modulator output frequency of your sky box is exactly the same as for example chanel 5 on your terestrial aerial.
You need to change this number to a different one thats clear of local terestrial transmissions
1) Select the Services button on your Sky or Sky+ remote control.
2) Type in 401 [select] on your key pad and you will get to the installer menu. You cant gain access to this via the drop down menu as it is designed for the Sky Engineer to use.
3)
Select Option 4 to configure the RF outlets on your Sky Digibox.
4) The option RF Chanel Number change this number from example 35 to 60 .
You may need to do this using other numbers 26 34 55 etc
Every time you alter the number store it then try & tune TV to sky.
Any other sets in the house connected by RF leads will require retuning for sky.
Save new settings and you should find that your RF outlet to TV works fine.

i've just some digging around and found that you can access a service menu and perform a reset which sorted the issue for me.
Access the service menu by pressing, in order, whilst the tv is in stand-by mode:
info
menu
mute
power
when the tv comes back on you will have a service menu; select option 12 (reset) the tv will then switch off.
this will reset your TV back to factory defaults.
turn
tv back on and you should be prompted to go through the plug and play
setup again - go through everything and then all should start working
OK (it did for me)

You will need to have an outdoor aerial installed, the signal area you're now living in will not be a strong enough reception for an indoor aerial no matter how good or expensive. You could try the indoor aerial in different positions around the room especially by a window to try & pick up some other channels but the long term this will cause some of the programmes to break up or freeze. An aerial on the roof or in the attic will be your best solution to pick up all the digital channels on freeview.
