External hard drive not detected

Hi

My iomega external hard drive (250GB) is not being detected by my laptop. I tried another laptop and another wire to connect it with the laptop but it didn't work. The light is on and I can hear voice when I connect it. I searched in the internet I think I need to change the logic board which I don't know what it is. I thought about giving it to the company but I am afraid that I lose my data.
I need the data that is on it , how can I get it?

Thank you

NO MODEL told there are many. not told number
    as old as 2008 made.
you posted to 3.5" drives and here is my answer based only on that fact and no model told.
    your model is? bottom label
    31641200- mdha250-u
it does have a power pack !!!

OP shazda post is devoid of useful facts
NO PC told and no OS told at all.
or is the ext hdd connected to a TV>???
we can not guess PCs nor Tv's sorry;.
    nor the PC OS, running
nor if you moved it from 1 PC to another
or upgraded you OS, to w10>?
not said once, USB< using USB !
try all usb ports on PC.?
try it on 2nd good PC? . omg simple test!
there are in fact many causes
seen here, even all ways to fail told.

yours is 3.5" drive USB and needs it its own power pack or the hDD motor fails hard.
    (typical)
12vdc 2amps or more it needs, don not use the wrong pack , with 5 under my desk, easy that.
    http://pcdied.com/HDD-SDD/external-hdd2....

some iomega drives then 3;5" had no power new in the box, and then failed on vast laptops
    with USB 1 or USB2
and those weak ports will never run any 3.5" hdd ever made, 3.5" drives need 2000MA to run
and start most old PC can not do that.
    facts. all.
    looking in old ads
    i see your boxed drive.

    amazon reviewer complained then
    no MAC support.
ntfs formatted drives are useless there.

1: power pack lost or mixed up to wrong.
2: HDD is bad now, as most are. a 9 year run wow, are you lucky. even 5 us anazing
3: hdd not formatted right, for your unstated PC. and unstated OS.
4: PC has dead USB ports try them all 1by1
5: and lots more, does it fail on 2nd PC?

ask for more tests, I have them all to tell.

SOURCE: My iomega external hard drive (250GB) is not being

Most hard drives have two parts that you can replace one is the circuit board that controls the read/write head sometimes if you replace this with the exact board with the correct firmware (a few star drive screws) then it might bring the HDD to life.

The sad news is that if the mechanical part of the HDD has failed then it cost you £100's of pounds to recover the data from specialist companies.

Do not despair buy a new one of at least 250GB and you could try the old fridge trick with a zip lock bag overnight I have use this once to get the drive to work for a short time at least then using Windows Commander set it to copy all the folders to the new drive I have recovered about 70% of data from a failed drive this way.

REQUIRE WINDOWS 7 DRIVER FOR IOMEGA SILVER SERIES 250GB EXTERNAL HARD DISC DRIVE. THANK YOU

The external hard-drive is "plug-and-play", and Windows XP/Vista/7 all support "plug-and-play".
Thus, it should automatically be detected by Windows.

So, what's your "real" problem? Symptoms? Error-messages? What happens? What does not happen?
