Tens of thousands of these Nikon Coolpix 2100 and Nikon Coolpix 3100 cameras have broken at the flimsly battery door latch molded onto the body of the camera. A few dozen people have fixed it themselves and Nikon refuses to fix it even under warranty (Nikon Service Relations 800-645-6678).
You can fix the Nikon Coolpix design flaw with a tripod screw and metal plate

I just purchased a new battery door for $15 with shipping from nikon. They sent a simple assembly diagram and I was able to replace the door in 30 minutes. I used a dremel to cut the old door off, but you dont have to do that. I got a little impatient.
Just buy the plastic piece and u can reuse the metal parts for your old battery door.
My Nikon E3100 also have this problem. I fixed it myself. You can find it at http://amtpls.multiply.com/journal/item/32/Broken_Door_Latch_on_Nikon_E_3100 Unfortunately, it was Indonesian Language, but by looking the photograph, you'll understand the principles.
Gtg050xj: Can you post the URL link where you just purchased a new battery door for $15 with shipping from nikon.?
Many thanks,

I have the SAME problem. I thought I was just a poor camera owner. But when I googled it, I found you guys. Guess I am not alone. :) Thanks...
I fixed the same problem with a broken door latch by heating a flat-end paperclip to red heat, letting it cool slightly and pressing it carefully into the internal compartment and the plastic flowed around it in places and 'glued' it in place
works fine now !!
I first removed the stubs of broken latch and adjusted the required height of paperclip protruding by holding it down with a blob of 'blu tak' prior to 'heat welding'
Got a new door latch from Nikon in Ontario for about $15 - they wanted $65 to do it themselves -sent me the wrong door first time. After sending them a photocopy they sent the correct door. Having a hell of a time with the seized screws on the metal battery contact on the door and don't want to strip them. Can't figure out how to get the door off the body - the metal hing seems imbedded in the plastic housing. Any ideas before I try to get info out of Nikon's service dept.?
I have the same problem. My solution is shown on the picture.
My camera is no more possible to startup and function a anymore

I have a Nikon s210!! and I dropped it and the little orange battery door broke off and it had a spring that broke off with it too. I broke it a few months ago also (i have bad luck with electronics) before getting it fixed but the spring wasn't broken off with it and they fixed it with my warranty. This time they aren't fixing it unless i pay $87 plus shipping which will be $103 and I REFUSE to pay that much! Has anyone ever had this problem with the spring??? If so, how the HELL do I fix it?
