I have a 32 inch Emerson. When I try to connect my laptop via HDMI nothing shows up. the TV just shows HDMI 1 in the top right corner. there are two HDMI ports and I have tried both (yes I know what one is HDMI 1 and HDMI 2) I've tested so many different combinations and nothing works. however when I hook up my Xbox 360 via HDMI and i use the same cable and same ports it works fine. Also the laptop will connect to the other televisions in my house so I know its not the Laptop. How do I get my laptop to show on the TV??
Double check to see if your TV can support the resolution that your laptop is using. You can try reducing the resolution on your laptop to one supported by your TV.
If the laptop is configured to use the HDMI port as a second (in Windows 7, you can configure multi-monitor support in the display preferences) you will need to adjust the resolution for that monitor.
Failing that, try rebooting your laptop with the TV plugged in - I have found in some cases that this helps the system to propery detect a new display.
I've tried every resolution and I have tried rebooting my laptop while its connected to the tv via HDMI cable still nothing. my laptop does not even detect the monitor and the tv does not detect the computer when i search for it. I am very very confused on why this is happening because i just plugged my xbox back in and it works fine and i took my laptop to my other tvs and it works fine on them
Do you have a "Format" button on your remote? It could be that you have your display set to 16:9 - some Emerson TV's only support "Normal", "Full" and "Unscaled" as settings for PC input.
Yeah I tried that it just tells me picture format not adjustable
it will work on pc source with a vga but no audio obviously so thats why i want hdmi

Hi have you tried going into the menu option using the telly controll and switching the hd mode on this should then allow you to use the xbox through hdmi cable
SOURCE: TV wont detect HDMI Devices except a pc.
Something is wrong whith the HDMI jack it's self, or the electronic switching is not sensing a signal is present. In either case the board that has the HDMI jack you are using needs to be replaced. Most all these boards are double printed, Multi-layered or both which prevents replacing the jack it's self. I do have a question though, do you only have on HDMI jack on the unit or do you have another one available.

You have to use the scart connector for on screen menu settings. Go to the video option and enable HDMI and/or match resolution output to your set.
You did not mention the model of the TV so here is another scenario,
Just because the TV is 1 year old doesn't mean that it is a 1080p capable, you could have set the HDMI resolution settings to 1080p and you will not get any picture if your set cannot process the information.

I succeeded is using the DirectTV remote control for the Emerson 42" plasma TV, by using a Samsung code. On my TV, was 10060. If this one does not work, there are a bunch of others that might work. Good luck
