The headlights don't work. Originally only the brights worked. While running they also stopped working. The dimmer switch will change it from bright to dim.

There could be several potential causes for both the tail lights and headlights not working and for the headlights turning on the brights when the vehicle is placed in gear. Some possible causes include:
A blown fuse: If a fuse has blown, it can cause the lights to stop working. Check the fuse box and replace any blown fuses.
A problem with the wiring: If the wiring has become damaged or has come loose, it could cause issues with the lights.
A malfunctioning light switch: The light switch might not be functioning properly, which could cause the lights to not work.
A problem with the headlight switch: If the headlight switch is malfunctioning, it could cause the headlights to turn on the brights when the vehicle is placed in gear.
A problem with the dimmer switch: If the dimmer switch is not functioning properly, it could cause the headlights to turn on the brights when the vehicle is placed in gear.
It's recommended to have a mechanic diagnose the issue to determine the cause and recommend the necessary repairs.
I think it's either the headlight switch or the dimmer switch. I would get a manual on your car. Head light switch you have to take apart the colum to replace it.
I don't believe there is a fuse. There is a circuit breaker built into the headlight switch. If you are sure the headlight switch is good, it could be a bad dimmer switch. If you have a voltmeter, with the headlight switch turned on, a larger yellow wire going from the headlight switch to the dimmer switch should be a hot wire. The dimmer switch sends power on a tan wire to the low beams, and through a light green wire to the high beam bulbs.
If your high beam indicator on the dash also doesn't work, then it is likely one of those switches. A voltmeter or test light would need to be used to find which one is bad. If you can find the connector at the steering column going to the dimmer switch, pull it apart and check for power on the yellow wire coming from the headlight switch, with the headlight switch turned on. If no power, the headlight switch is bad. If there is power there, then the dimmer switch must be bad.
I think I answered this question this morning, but it may have been for a different car. Assuming the headlights are ok, I would check for power in and out of the dimmer switch, then the headlight switch. Both are incorporated into the turn signal switch on the column.
This is very common. the headlight switch is bad. replace the switch and that should solve the problem.
i have run into some that the dash lights dont work at all or they come on and off while driving. the switch goes bad. there is also a dimmer switch . the dimmer switch controls the dim or brightness off the lights.
It could very well be the dimmer switch. There is a plastic cover around the steering wheel held by a few screws. Remove the cover & replace the switch. First check headlight grounds for good connection. A common problem with well used cars is that after opening & closing the drivers door 2 million times the electical wires at the flex point where the door harness flexs tend to break. Open outer cover & pry back to expose the wires inside. The ones that are broken are the culprits. Hope this helps you & please recommend advice.
If the low beam head light relay is fine, and the dimmer switch checks out fine, then look at the out put wire from the dimmer switch to the head light relay, check for voltage, then check the relay to see if it energizes. Then follow the wire(out put)from the relay to the head light. Now if power from the dimmer is getting to the relay, but the relay is not energizing, look for a bad relay,or bad relay ground wire.
