There are several things that could cause this, but what happend to mine a few months back is a really simple mechanical error. Probably what is happening is that when the disk drive closes then either the reader is not spinning or it is not engaging.
If you open the disk drive up then power up and see what happens you can diagnose it. Open up the silver box, look underneath and press close. If when you do this the white toggles reach the end of their run (the last 3mm are not used) then the problem is likely its not spinning if it doesnt then the problem is not rising.
To fix either, lift up the two plastic locks on the tray itself and remove it so you can see inside. There should be a cog with teeth on your left, a medium and a small cog running a band between them in the middle and a white line with teeth at one end and a control on the right.
If its not spinning then the problem should be that the two cogs with the band arnt turning/are snapped, simply replace them and all should be hunky dory.
If its not rising then pushing the white line to the right untill it engages with the teeth cog on the left and it should rise, this problem can be permanently fixed simply by adding a tiny block to the end so it can still disengage but will be imediately re-engaged when needed.
For open tray message, there is a possibilty that the game disc is causing the issue or the console itself.
try using a different gamedisc,or a DVDs,CDs, if the same message appeared, call xbox support hotline or go to service.xbox.com to process a repair for the console.
