All regular DVDs play just fine but when I try to play Blue-Ray discs they do not play the player says "unknown" and the Tv says "unable to play disc". I've already reset the player to the factory settings with help from the Sony Help line on the phone.. but it still does the same thing.. the tech started talking about the router and totally lost mr ... please help
Once you have found that Blu-ray player won't play Blu-ray disc, the first thing is to have a further check on your Blu-ray player because this is one of the main reasons that may result in the failure.
If you have checked your Blu-ray player and it turned out to be perfectly set, then the reasons for the failure may fall to the Blu-ray disc itself.
You can check on this:
Why Won't My Blu-ray Players Play Blu-ray Discs
If unit does this with all blue ray disks, old and new ones, then the unit is defective. Period
Router has nothing to do with the playback of a disk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SOURCE: blue ray player wont play blue ray ''Kung Fu Panda'' disc.
i fixed this exactly as previous posted solutions, however a couple of points.
a) recordable CDs work if you don't have a DVD burner.
b) I didn't have a CD burner that would do an "image burn", I downloaded a free copy of "Express Burn" and that worked fine. The disk needs to be "finalised" or "fixated", it should do this automatically, or it may be a tick box selection.
c) I got a "No DWLD 09" when I put the disk into the player. I found this was an incompatibility with the CD-R (Maxwell) I was using. I changed to JVC and it worked fine.
SOURCE: I can't get my blue ray player to play Avatar Blue
Like Kelt67 said a firmware is needed....Avatar holds a lot of memory on the blu ray disc as that's one reason there are no trailers just strictly the movie and that's it on the blu ray....Avatar works perfectly fine in my PS3 but then my fiance tried watching on a regular Sony blu ray player and it just sits and loads forever....needs a firmware upgrade need to pop the firmware disc in and download by contacting your blu ray manufacture if no ethernet port on your blu ray player.

I had the same problem with mine and took a chance. it would read dvds but not blu-ray disc. i have done this procedure before with a regular dvd player so i tried it with my blu-ray and it worked. First you must open the blu-ray and take the blu-ray/dvd drive out open it up expose the lazer eye reader (make sure the blu-ray player is unpluged) and clean the eye with cotton swab diped in rubing alcohol.i would recommend using a flashlight when doing so. do this lightly and dry the eyes with the other side of the swab. you will see the difference once you clean it. I opened mine up after cleaning it with a dvd cleaner and the eye was still dirty. the eyes had a light film on it. I seen this on my dvd players that i have cleaned before. the film was enough to make the player not read the bul-ray disc. do not try this if you are not comfortable taking stuff apart and putting it back togetter. i hope this fixes your problem.

If you can play standard dvd movies without a problem, then you are looking at a laser pickup assembly issue. The blue ray disc require more precision to provide the higher resolution when it is demanded, this is an early indicator of impending failure in the assembly. However there is a small chance that cleaning the laser pickup lens may solve the problem but unlikely.
