Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. You do need to check the motor drive. Make sure the belt is not slipping or worn. That could be the case. It may be wearing out as you have suggested. You just need to get to it and determine the cause.
If it wont spin at all, check the lid switch. If it will spin but not fast enough to spin the water out of the clothes, it sounds like the clutch could be slipping.
If it is pumping out some of the water then the pump is probably okay and the problem is probably in the clutch or belt slipping not spinning the clothes fast enough.
The shaft was designed to rotate into 2 directions: one for agitation, one for spinning. The spinning direction is controlled by a mechanism from the clutch engagement. When your plastic pulley wears out, it effects the mechanism to spin. The driving force for spinning is slipped, therefore the spin is weak As a matter of fact, the water remaining in clothes n in turn discharges to the bottom tube
check the drain hose for kinks or too much of a rise If the water does not completly drain before the cycle starts it will not spin fast enough to spin out the clothes. also check the belt condition. The belt could be slipping.
We have exact same washer. It is 11 years old. We are at a point where we have to spin it 7 times and then still isn't too dry. It dies yesterday a very loud death. Mentioning this here because it could be a foreshadowing of your Kenmore 90's future.
First thing you need to check is the speed of the spin cycle. As long as you are not overloading the machine, it should spin the clothes pretty dry. the basket drive may need to be replaced. If it is spinning very fast, then check the drain hose, make sure the water is coming out nice and fast. If not you may have a water pump problem even lint clogged inside it.
