Tip & How-To about Plumbing
Living in a rural area and not having a connection to the sewage systems like houses in the cities or suburbs can make waste disposal a little difficult. That's where septic tanks come in they are made to take care of your sewage but if not cared for properly can result in a huge mess and stink. Following these 5 simple tips can help to keep your septic tank running properly and trouble free.
1. Keep rain water away
Make sure that you level the land around the tank so that rain water is diverted away from the tank. If you get too much water into the drain field it will become too soggy and won't neutralize liquid waste.
2. Trees mind their distance!
When trees grow too close to the septic tank their roots can cause damage to the system. A good rule of thumb is to not have any trees closer than 100 feet from the tank.
3. Toilet etiquette
This rule seems to be very obvious, you shouldn't be sending anything that shouldn't be going down the toilet must not go down the toilet. Things like wipes, or sanitary napkins and tampons will clog the septic tank and then you will have a big problem before you know it.
4. Stay away
For the system to function properly you have to make sure that it stays clear and undisturbed. This means don't drive over the drain field or build anything on top of it. Even pouring concrete or asphalt is a no, no.
If there is a problem with your system make sure to call an expert to come and look at it, under no circumstance should you open the tank yourself, there are harmful gases and bacteria in that require you to wear special gear.
