Re: Why is this tekronix 860 printer kept flashing error...
Tektronix printer paper trays, I seem to recall that there's a plastic key that fits on the right side of the paper tray. It's a little plastic piece that just clips in on the right side of the paper tray. Sounds like it's missing

ok lets troubleshoot... lets say the issue is tray 4... try switching tray 3 with tray 4... if error moved to 3 then something is broken on tray 3... examine it... compare it to tray 3 and find whats missing... if possible fix... if not replace...
if issue did not move then get a flash light and look deep into machine... see if anything is obstructing... could be as simple as a piece of paper... also make sure that the sensor arm isn't stuck or broken... bad sensors can cause this issue...
which leads to my next suggestion.... most trays have a rocker sensor somewhere that tells the copier the tray is closed... if both suggestions previously made did not work then find this rocker arm and trigger it... if it does not work when pushed in all the way then the sensor is bad...
These printer have a problem grabing the paper from the upper tray it might look like it was ready to print but they usally miss grabing the second sheet of paper from the upper tray.
On the right side you will see Three (3) holes the plastic piece you found when in the bottom hole.
Since it is broken it will no longer snap into place.
Make your self fom either plastic or cardboard, a piece that will cover the bottom hole but not so big that it will block the hole above it.
Then using a good stiff tape (eloectical or duck) paste the piece over the hole, making sure you don't block the hole above it, or any other part of the machine.
I have taken a plastic knife cut to size and superglued it in.
If all else fails you can order that plastic piece that broke from Xerox. It's called a paper size sensor. about $5.00 for the part and about $10.00 for shipping.
Make sure you have a receiving tray. You can live without your sending tray. If you have the receiving tray and it says TRAY OFF thats because its not seated properly onto the frame. Make sure the tray engages the black sensor next to the speaker, also make sure you have paper in both trays to get rid of the OUT OF PAPER error. If the OUT OF PAPER error continues then you have a broken sensor in the upper tray.
Simply pull your printer away from the wall about 8". The tray needs to stick out from the back of your printer when it loads. If it hits the wall, it will not work properly and eject. Just try moving your printer forward enough so the tray can stick out from the back and you'll be fine.
Error Code 6001 ~ 6999 are simply service required errors and are very general. I would imagine that if the tray is missing the printer will produce a fault.
For starters it will think it has no paper and therefore will not try to pick up paper from the tray. If the tray is opened during operation I believe the printer stops, therefore there must be a sensor for the tray - no tray means sensor is operated.
Best guess - fit a tray.
