When typeing the ribbon only drives a short distance each time causing it to print over itself. The ribbon is fine looks like the motor is not driving it far enough.

Turn the T/W off, slide the carrier to the R., look for debris in the carrier area. Spray some WD40 on the silver shaft that the carrier slides on. Move the carrier back and forth to be sure tghere isn't a bind or hitting something.
On the lhs of the keyboard check the Pitch Sel slide switch position;...it may be in the PS position...change it to 10,12 etc, to match your print wheel.
mark the ribbon where it turns, where there is a pin of the typewriter passing through the ribbon,mark it with a white marker.
and type something, if it doesnt turn, you know the machine has a problem.
or try everytime pressing on the ribbon, if it works you know the ribbon is coming up, check if the correction ribbon is placed good.behind the correctable ribbon.

check the multiwire cable harness under the carriage assmbly..may have one or two broken wires close to the carriage itself...if this is the case you will probably have to have the carriage replaced.
