Dmr e85 will not start up

I turn the unit on but it either goes into self test mode and turns itself off or turns itself off straight away before going into self test mode

Unit runs fine until switched to from hdd to dvd ,or dvd is inserted, it then turne off and starts cycling thru self check and off again , eventually completes the self check and starts working .sometimes 3min , or 30

    minutes or more

Have turned unit off and unpluged for 1/2hr ,

    Have used different dvd's

    Cleaned dust from power supply

I have the same problem. When turned on the recorder keeps self-checking. A few times or 15 minutes. Sometimes it starts immediately. No dust inside. Mo cure so far.

I have discovered my E85 to have an inadequate power supply. I took the lid off, and used an ancient computer power supply to power the HDD. Since then I have not had a problem with it cutting out dead and self checking on startup whenever I tried to hi-speed access (including dubbing, finalizing, viewing Navigator etc on the DVD.) It does not have enough power to supply every component during peak actions, and just cuts itself out. But not now!

Hi Audi,
Try unplugging the hdd & then turn on the dvd recorder & wait for about 5 minutes.
Then unplug the dvd recorder & plug in the hdd & turn back on the dvd recorder to see if that fixes the problem.

    Hi everyone,

I have now found out the problem & it is to do with the power supply.

You will need to change a part on the power supply.

    Part number: STR G6353

This part will cost about £13.00 which is a lot but if you think of the cost of a new dvd recorder, then it works out well worth it!

I changed that part & now I have a fully working Panasonic dvd recorder.

The problem is to do with Panasonic & there design fault its to do with the way they designed the recorder, the heatsink is to small for a start & second they shouldn't of put the HDD on top of the power supply as there isn't enough air flow in the space to cool down the power supply, so the part above overheats after a few years & shuts down.

I have modified the recorder & there is two 40x10x10mm fans which are running in the recorder 24/7

I hope this information helps someone out.

    Regards Tom.

I had a similar problem with my DMR-E55. Two capacitors were shot. Search this website for solutions posted by me and otheres.

Pan. dmr-e85h turned itself on, self-check

Open case and look for failed capacitors, which are cylindrical and will have a bulging top and a yellow/gold substance leaking out. If this is the problem, search for previous solutions that mention "solder capacitor C1260" for the DMR-E85. I had a similar 'no power' problem with my DMR-E55 and my son and I were able to fix it Sunday. Not hard to do and mine is working again!

Stuck in self check mode

Hi

Unfortunately, this is a common fault with these units.
Fortunately though, it can be fixed.

See my earlier solution show below.......

Ok guys, you asked for a fix for the DMR E55 Self Checking cycle. Here goes.
In 99% of cases this is caused by a faulty regulator on the main power board.

The power board is located on the right hand side of the unit. The regulator is IC001 which is mounted on a thin metal strip which acts as a totally inadequate heatsink. This means that this component constantly works at temperatures beyond its tolerance.

Because of this it usually lasts a couple of years and then starts causing problems. The Self Checking syndrome is typical. If the regulator burns out completely, it can take other components with it, blow fuses and scorch the circuit board.

If you are competent in using a soldering iron with care, order an STRG 6353 regulator. These can be obtained online from a number of suppliers.

Disconnect your DMR E55 from the power source and remove the lid. Next, remove the fixing screws from the circuit board on the right where the regulator is located. Carefully remove the multi connector on the left side of the board. Remove the screw above the power connector on the rear of the unit. The power board can now be removed from the cabinet.

Using a small pair of wire cutters, clip all five pins from the old regulator as close the the top of the board as possible. Undo the screw securing it to the heatsink and remove the old regulator which can now be thrown away.

Next, using your soldering iron, remove what's left of the pins from the printed board and with a solder ****** or desoldering braid, clear the holes ready to accept your new regulator. Be careful because if you over heat the print it can lift away from the board.

Use a little heatsink compound on the back of your new regulator, poke the pins through the circuit board and then secure it to the heatsink. I usually fit an extra heatsink on these units which helps to reduce heat and prolong the life of the new component.

Next, resolder the 5 pins on the print side of the board. Use a magnifying glass and make sure you haven't missed anything or bridged connections in error and caused short circuits.

Now put the board back. This can be a little tricky but it's easy enough if you take care. Refit all the screws and carefully reconnect the multi connector.

If you have followed this correctly, switch the unit back on, pop in a DVD and give it a try. Unless you are very unlucky, Your DMR E55 will no longer repeatedly self check and will operate correctly.

Whilst it saddens me to hear that some of you guys would toss your DMR E55s into the trash can for such an easily repairable problem, please do not attempt this unless you are confident in your own ability.

Finally, do check that the fan operates but remember it is temperature controlled and will not activate until it is needed. Do not assume it is faulty because you do not see it working straight away. I have repaired lots of DMR E55s and I have never found a single fan or fan control circuit to be faulty. That's not to say it can't fail. good luck...

Panasonic DMR-E85 DVD recorder TV Guide problem

Try unplugging the DMR-E85 power cord. It is important that you unplug it from the back of the recorder, not the wall. Leave it unplugged for 10 or 15 minutes. For good measure disconnect the cable 'in' connection as well. Once both lines are plugged back in it will go through its self-check diagnostics. Leave it alone for awhile (give it time to consider the error of it's ways). If you are lucky, when you turn it back on it will ask you to verify the channel lineup. If this does work, and all the channel info is correct, press 'enter' (lineup 1 highlighted). Good luck! This is an awesome machine, WHEN IT WORKS!

DVD Recorder keps re-starting self test & will also not finalize discs.

This seems to be a common problem with the E55 and E85 models, could be one of two things, either the RAM Drive or the Power control ic (STRG6353 primary side of PSU), i would suspect its the latter. You'll need an engineer to replace this component.
