Formatting tv screen

Its picture settings should be adjusted. Now it is set to 'wide' format I assumes. If you want to get full screen, the display format should be chaged. Without a remote control, it is not possible.

Either an adjustment of the vertical height or Lin or a circuit problem in the vertical circuit.

Some sets have physical controls inside the set on the board or in a hidden menu via the remote.

change picture format to 16.9 in the menu or if there is button on remote ( aspect / format or zoom ) or a picture of a square with two lines in it press until picture look ok

I believe your TV is in "ZOOM" mode for the screen. This will make a 4x3 picture come up closer to fill in the 16x9 screen, but this cuts off the top and the bottom.
Keep pressing the WIDE button on your remote until the picture looks best.
If you have HD channels, the screen mode should be on NORMAL. HD channels will have the 16x9 screen format.

The non-HD channels will have 4x3 screen format. When the screen mode is on NORMAL, you will have the cut off picture on the sides because the 4x3 format will not fill in a 16x9 screen.

hi, this can be resolved by trimming the output in the formatting section of the menu screen. (display options). you wil want to choose the 16:9 format. this will keep everything inside the screen boundaries.

It sounds like you're watching wide screen content on a 4:3 tv, so the screen may be zoomed in so that the bars that would normally be on the top and bottom are not showing. Because the picture is zoomed in, images that would be at the top and bottom are off the screen. If you're watching from a home receiver (Uverse, DirecTv, Xfinity, etc.) you need to change the video settings to let the receiver know that your TV's aspect ratio is 4:3 (full screen) and not 16:9 (widescreen). Also, if your channel lineup has the option of watching CNN on a standard definition channel, that would also help because the shape of the image would be what your tv was designed for. If you watch 16:9 programs, you will have to choose letter box mode (bars on top and bottom because the shape of the widescreen image does not match the shape of your tv), pillar box mode (bars on either side) zoomed, or stretched. Stretched will make the shape of everything appear distorted, as it squeezes a widescreen image on the sides to make it narrow enough, so that everyone will have tall and skinny heads like an old Kung Fu movie. The sharpest picture would likely be to watch 16:9 (hi def) content in letterbox mode (bars on top and bottom) so at least you get the proper aspect ratio that the sports were recorded in, and it comes from a sharper source (HD vs SD). I would just deal with the bars, because even with a widescreen tv, there will sometimes be bars because that's how programs are sometimes recorded, for different visual impact or cinematic effect.

This is normal - you are zooming in on the picture. Most people use the zoom feature to "stretch" a widescreen movie so it will fit the screen.

Well lets try the simple things first, Go to the TVs menu using the original TV remote and find the icon or menu that says Captions, in that menu turn all the closed captions OFF. Second there is a button on the original TV remote that says format, push this till you get to a screen that says FULL in the upper left corner. That should resolve your problems, If closed caption still comes through then we need to know if this set is hooked directly to cable or goes through a cable box. It sound like you simply had the closed caption turned on and the screen in one of the zoom formats this TV provides

Also, try adjusting the settings on your cable box, not on the TV. The usually solves the problem and will then allow you to adjust the size of the picture.
