If it flickers on as in you see an image, it's not the inverter. If your image is there but you can only see it if you hold it up to a strong light, then it is an inverter issue.

Your internal video driver may be missing or corrupt. If you have driver issues, plug in the external monitor and go right to the Dell website, click Support, and have the system locate your service tag number. The service tag may also be on the bottom of your laptop unless the sticker fell off. You will need this to get the correct drivers. Once you get a list of drivers, look for the video driver.

SOURCE: DELL inspiron 6400 laptop screen turned black

this sounds like a classic case of inverter problems, it could be just inverter coil thats gone which is an inexpensive repair, if it is the inverter then its a bit more.
try the Fn the F key that shows two tv screen icons, it may just have switched to external mode by accident

good luck

SOURCE: D800 laptop will not display on external monitor

Most laptops go into standby mode when the lid is closed. To stop this, (Windows XP) click Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Power Options, then click on the Advanced tab, select "Do nothing" in the drop-down for "When I close the lid of my portable computer"

SOURCE: The screen on my laptop stays a grey colour after

You could try reseating the video cable under the keyboard
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latx1/en/sm/keyboard.htm#wp1111863
Could be a failed cable (Chafing in the hinge) or a bad LCD
System is old enough that if reseating doesn't resolve, might not be worth the cost to repair

SOURCE: dell latitude D610. Screen goes black. External Monitor OK.

Make sure you have not accidentally used the FN+F5 key
That combination sets the laptop to use an external display.

If using that does not give you a display take a small torch (flashlight if in USA) and shine it at an angle on the laptop screen.
If you can see any sort of picture you would be looking at replacement of some minor parts to the laptop screen

Hope this gives you the information you need. If not add any extra information you may have and lets see if we can FixYa

SOURCE: dell laptop screen goes blank when ac adapter plugged in

I believe I have found the problem with the 1525 that I am currently working on which has the same problem that you describe. Ultimately I think it's a problem with the inverter in the LCD. When the laptop is powered by battery the brightness is lower than full. When I plug in the power adapter the brightness goes to "full" and I hear a faint sizzle and the LCD's backlight goes off. Same as if you hold the Fn key and press the up arrow to brighten it, it will do the same thing when you reach near the full brightness. So for now I have fixed this problem by going in the Power Options and clicked on Adjust the display brightness on the left. Slide the slider to the left on the "plugged in" part and now when you plug it in it shouldn't make it go blank. I do want to note that I hear a faint buzz coming from the LCD when I plug it in. That must mean the inverter is faulty. WAY TO GO DELL!!!!!!

Laptop monitor bad color and flickers continuely, but when attached to external monitor, works fine

I'm going to take an educated guess here, because it sounds like the monitor's interface controller is bad. I forgot the name of the thing, but it's a small circuit board that's normally located at the bottom of the panel frame, between the flat ribbon cables and the round hinge cables.

Dell Inspiron 4100 flickering off and on Makes it extremily hard to work with . How can I tell whether it is the display or something else?

What happens when you hook it up to a external monitor? If it works fine with a external monitor, then your laptop monitor is going bad. If it does it with an external monitor, then its more than likely an issue with your laptops video adapter.

My monitor on my Dell laptop went completely black while I was on it. I have tried turning it off and back on, and the monitor is not working at all

You may have a defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashes on and off or displays reddish pink hue. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickers on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replace the CCFL lamp.
To determine if the video card or the LCD is faulty, connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight. It could be a faulty inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out; usually the CCFL lamp fails before the inverter.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

MY ACER LAPTOP SCREEN TURNS ON BUT THE SCREEN IS BLACK

To determine if you have a video card problem or the LCD screen is at fault.
Connect an external monitor to the video port on the laptop and boot up your laptop, if you get a display on the external monitor then your video card is OK and you have a faulty LCD.

When you power your laptop without an external monitor and have a close look at the LCD screen at and you see a slight image then the fault is with the backlighting panel. This fault could be a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL backlight lamp.

Defective CCFL backlight may has the following symptom:
  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
The inverter can be easily replaced so can the CCFL lamp (but requires a lot more work)

Dell inspiron 1150 laptop black screen

Can you hear the Windows startup noises but can't hear it?

Does it work plugged into an external monitor? (Any good CRT or flat screen should work.

Be sure to plug in the screen before you turn it on.
If it doesnt output to the LCD automatically you may have to hit FN-F8 to switch to external.

If it works on external monitor you are just dealing with a screen problem of some sort - either a bad inverter or backlight in the LCD most commonly...
