Backlighting issues on tv set (I think). Screen goes extremely dark after about 30 min. of viewing. Does not return to orginial brightness unless unit is left off for a long period of time

TV works fine for first 30 min or so, then goes extremely dark (still slightly visible). Audio fine, no burnt smell, etc. If you turn the set off for a while, picture will return to normal. After a moment or so, backlight seems like its failing and then screen gets abnormally dark again. I've changed the "brightness" settings and the case remains the same. Any ideas as to what I should do. The unit is about 2 years old (problem started 6 months after initial purchase).

I have a 55 inch TCL TV and the issue is that the right side of the screen turns to a shaded color between black and gray that only happens when I set my tv to the brightness settings of Brighter, bright,...

Follow this procedure to troubleshoot a TV picture that is too dark. Refer to the manual provided with the TV if additional model-specific instructions are needed to perform any of the steps listed.
  1. If Picture mode is set to Cinema or Custom, the screen may become dark. If the screen is still dark after the picture quality mode is changed, change the setting Backlight, Picture, Brightness and adjust the brightness to your taste.
Example of setting method: Check Picture Mode from Settings - Display - Picture and change the setting.NOTE: When a TV is in a store they are set up for Shop Front display settings which are very bright and vivid. However, some Sony TVs may be shipped with more energy-friendly settings to comply with energy savings programs such as the Energy Star. Depending on such settings, the picture brightness level can be higher or lower.
  2. If Power Saving is set to Low or High, the screen becomes dark.
Example of setting method: Select Settings - System Settings - Eco and set Power Saving to Normal or Off, and then check whether the problem is resolved.
  3. Some TVs have Light Sensor feature; the picture will become brighter or lower depending on room lighting conditions.
Turning off the Light Sensor or Automatic Brightness Control (depends on your TV model) may increase picture brightness.
  4. View programming from a different source, such as a DVD player or VCR, to see if the issue is being caused by the device providing the signal to the TV.
NOTE: If the dark picture issue is displayed when viewing from one device only, the dark picture issue is being caused by that device, not the TV. Contact the device manufacturer for additional troubleshooting information.
  5. If it is a projection TV, consider replacing the lamp.
IMPORTANT: The method to replace the lamp differs by model. Refer to the instruction manual for model-specific steps to replace the lamp.

Vizio lcd flatpanel tv with dark background

If half screen is affected it will be either a board (LCD and Plasma have different names) but in those one board drives each side of the screen unit--worst case is the display panel itself which is fatal from a cost point of view.

When i turn on my samsung tv picture come 1 second and then goes completly black can you please tell me what is problem.

Hi, I'm afraid i think I know what the culprit is. It sounds like you have a weakened power supply for the backlight section. This will be the case especially if you have voices from t.v. with no picture ( actually can see shadows on screen-just is dark from lack of backlighting ) Your only resort besides having it put in the shop is to try and let the set rest long enough to come on for perhaps a few minutes. If you can acheive this it is possible to turn down the brightness in the sets " MENU " under settings. If you have ever adjusted the sharpness, color, contrast this is where you will need to be. Just turn down the brightness by abought half, and that should stop tv from going dark,if not it needs to be repaired. I hope this has been of some use-good luck, Prodzilla

Tv goes black and can still hear sound, then it will shut off, then turn back on. will repeat after 5 mins

Hey iterry,

I have the same TV with what seems to be the same problem (screen off, audio remains until turning off->on); posted in several places (including here) but yet to receive a conclusive advice.

Please check the following:

- Does the screen turn off exactly 5 min. later - or when high brightness frames come up (could be 1...2...15 min. into the run;you can check that by pausing on a dark frame for a while)?

- Try altering the set to 4:3, low definition (did mine through my UVerse menus) as well as manually reducing the brightness settings; see if this gives you longer screen activity (I often manage for several hours, until some stupid commercial has a few seconds of a bright-white screen).

If we are indeed both in the same boat, my findings thus far are:
This is not a lamp issue (changed, no difference); not a color wheel issue (changed a couple of months before this ****); probably not a temperature issue - though I'm still checking that.

I'm hoping it's the ballast; will soon check and LYK. Good luck.

Raymarine E120, after 4h on display went dark in

blubaju, probably cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamp backlight failure! if unit dosen't have electro-luminescent style backlighting. All LCD panels require WHITE light to see what is on the screen!!! Is same common problem that computer (pc) lcd monitors suffer from!!! I suspect that if your unit has CCFL's, that the SMPS power supply or CCFlamp INVERTER circuit has a problem common to ALL LCD monitors. I should think that any BIG TIME tv/monitor repair shop could examine the printed circuit boards and effect a repair for you! Just mention that you think it suffers from the BLACK SCREEN of DEATH syndrome!!! Also mention that to RAYMARINE!!! when you call them and **** them out!! 12fixlouie .5hr nrth/wst of Windy City Rate this on fixya if this msg helpful??

No backlight

A couple things to try:

1st check the backlight settings

Turn on Backlighting and Control Brightness To use your device in dark environments, enable the automatic backlighting feature:
  1. From the Jump screen, press MENU t02003-15.gif then select Settings > Battery & Display.

  2. In the second group box, select the Turn on backlight when using device check box.

  3. Highlight, then select the Brightness slider to open it for editing. Roll the TRACKBALL right to increase brightness; roll the TRACKBALL left to decrease brightness. After you've made the adjustment, press the TRACKBALL to exit edit mode. t02007-55.jpg

  4. Select the length of time you want backlighting to stay on from the Turn off after pop-up menu.

  5. To use the device's light meter while the backlight is on, select the Use ambient light sensor check box.

  6. Press JUMP t02003-14.gif to return to the Jump screen and save your setting.
Now, when you press any button or key, or flip open the screen, backlighting will turn on for the set amount of time. Note that as long as you press a key or button before the set time elapses, the backlight will stay on.
Tips:
  • Even if you have not selected automatic backlighting, you can turn on backlighting at any time by pressing MENU t02003-15.gif + JUMP t02003-14.gif . The backlight will remain on for the time specified in the Backlight Turn off after pop-up menu.

  • When in key guard mode, you can turn on the backlight by pressing the RIGHT SHOULDER t02003-66.gif button.
If it still does not work, then you can try resetting the flex cable to the lcd.

Reseat the SidekickFlex cable

If that doesn't fix it then a new lcd assy will take care of the issue. they run about 45 dollars on ebay.
