Having trouble hooking up windows vista to Charter Internet Cable Service. Linux computer is working fine with same service, but when i hooked up the new compaq with vista no dice. Done all usual troubleshooting. thanks super nice world. joel
have you tried safemode with networking? sounds more like the os rather than internet,
as an isp is not allowed to be biast in which os can go online. i have xp and ubuntu, both work great on my virgin media net here in the uk, but you may have different kind of internet, so i would check whats actually starting up in vista. if linux works out of the box, then it most usually is a software issue, in this case, vista programs on startup, or registry.
or it could be as simple as something may have disabled the internet connections (e.g wireless or ethernet), sometimes it happens, odd as it may be. (mostly without explenation)

Unfortunately, this router is only able to be used with DSL. When you are using cable internet this router will be rendered useless with your new service. If you call customer service for Charter they do offer Home Networking that provides you with a wireless router for a small monthly fee or if you are looking for a lower cost one time charge you might check with them as well and see if they provide a "refurbished" wireless router or check on ebay for some good deals....
use your other computer to goto netgear.com look for downloads and find your adaptor. you may have an older adaptor that is not suitable for vista or windows 7. it may need an updated driver. so download the appropriate driver for the operating system to the working computer, and burn it to a cd. then you should be able to run the disk on the new computer. we at charter had this issue when vista came out, our install disks didnt have the right drivers. you just need the right drivers for the adaptor vs operatin system.
There are a problem with LAN connectivity.First you have to install the LAN driver compatible with VISTA not for XP.After that you have to call to ISP provider to re-configure your system on LAN .
When you go there everything is simular to xp. Vista has a built in self diagnostic that you can use if needed. You should have little trouble for it sounds like you are familar with checking these things out. Just don't be afraid of it.
Plug an ethernet cable in and it should use DHCP (autoconfigure) to hook up if you have a broadband service... If you have Wifi then it depends on what Operating System you use ie Windows XP, Vista, Linux, OS X but it should scan for networks in the area and connect to which ever one you would like to use. Also if you have a dialup ISP you will need to plug the laptop modem to a phone line and dial out that way... The easiest way is to run the disc that your ISP gives you after everything is setup like in the directions.

-- who is your internet service provider -- what is the operating system of your computer? -- is this working fine before or is this a brand new router
you may try this and see if this help solve your problem. make sure your computer is directly connected to the router
Step 1: Shutdown the computer. Step 2: reset the router while power on then Unplug the router’s power cable. Step 3: Unplug the Broadband modem’s power cable and wait for 30 seconds. Step 4: Plug in the Broadband modem’s power cable and wait for its lights to appear stable. Step 5: Plug in the router's power cable once the modem’s lights appear stable. Step 6: Power on the computer on and configure the router settings Step 7: test the Internet connection.
if this still didnot work, upgrade the firmware of your router
note:
configuring the router settings will depends who is your provider. if your isp is dsl you need to configure your ISP username and password on the router. if your router is a cable no need to change any settings on the router. it should automatically work
if you are still having trouble configuring your device, try to call supportrix and use supportcall as your promo code for 1 free technical support.
