Lets try an error code operational checl. Unplug the tv and plug it back in. With the standby LED on press and hold the MENU and DEVICE/INPUT buttons for 5 seconds. The LED will flash a certain number of times pause for a while and blink again. Count the blinks before and after the pass, then post it here so that I can tell you what the problem is

Picture has slowly gotten darker

It's time to change the projection bulb. You need to go to Amazon.com and search for tv bulb with model number of your TV. Now the tricky part is to try to get the bulb with the longest warranty. Don't get one with a 30 day cause the bulb may go bad by then. Get one with at least 120 days. As well read the reviews and make sure the other customers are happy.

Changing the bulb is easy and only requires a Philips screwdriver. There are YouTube videos to show you how. But these bulbs are very special and blow easily, so get one with a long warranty. And don't get a spare, cause by the time you need it, the warranty period will be up.

When TV is turned on the picture has become darker. This has been going on for a few days and its getting worse.

This sure sounds like a bad lamp. If it is over 3 years old change it.
Also, listen for loud buzzing sounds that may indicate a bad color wheel.
But this definitely sounds like a lamp that is about to go bad.

Hello, Greetings from Hamilton Ohio. I have a 54 inch Hitachi rear projection television and I believe the bulb is getting ready to go because it takes about four or five minutes before the picture comes...

Hello
And greetings from York PA!
Ok I have read what you were saying about your TV and after much consideration I dont think its the bulb because a bulb does not get better as it warms up! (most bulbs that are bad get worse as the TV warms up!) But capaciters do act this way when they go bad (stable when they warm up!) so I would have to say the control circut has one or more bad capiciters on it and will need replaced!
I hope this helps greatly!

Dark picture on RCA Scenium 61 in DLP

Yes, the lamp will gradually get darker as it nears it's end. The rolling lines sounds more like the set is on a local channel for the cable hook up. If your local area has a channel 3 or 4 live terestrial broadcast simply tune the cable box output to the other one, the same for the tv.
If this is cable/local broadcast issue it will go away in Febuary when the NTSC broadcast ends.

Sounds like you need to replace your lamp. The lamp number for this panasonic TV is TY-LA1001. Lamps run anywhere from $120-$250.

The tv has a room light sensor,
shine a bright light at it , does picture get brighter?
other wise when it is cool open the bulb door , is it coated or blackened, Don't touch bulb at all.

and a heavy covering of dust on internal mirrors will cause the same effect.
