Gas dryer wont stay on

I came home after leaving for a while and had some clother in the dryer - they were still damp but when i closed the door and tried to restart the dryer it would not stay on after I released the toggle switch. I tried holding it on for a few seconds and verified the tumbler was turning but then it started to smoke from the back and I unplugged unit. Any ideas?

Sounds like you've got a bad motor.

SOURCE: roper dryer wont work

Disconnect power from unit. The motors centrifugal switch is stuck in the on position. The switch mounts on the motor and when the start button is pushed during normal operation it powers up the motor just long enough to set it in motion. Spring loaded counterweights fly out and apply power to the run windings of the motor. The heater element is also energized as well. If it was me I would tear down the dryer and clean it up. OIl the switch, get it unstuck and retry. To get inside the dryer:you yank out the filter first.Remove the 2 screws in the filter housing on top. Then use a putty knife to pop the top. Remove the screws holding the front panel on. VERY IMPORTANT! Raise the front up an inch before pulling forward or the panel clips will break! Some models have a panel on bottom. If they do then this panel must come off first. Then you remove the door springs and back off the screws holding down the bottom of the door panel. Then pop the top and remove the screws on top to get the panel out of your way. Take the idler loose and get the drum out. Get a vacuum and clean the moter and inside real good. Oil the switch and get it free. This is not very difficult.

Replace the motor, the run winding is shot.It is not hard to replace the motor. The blower has reverse threads(righty loosy). The motor has a quick connect(no wiring needed). Yank out the filter first.Remove the 2 screws in the filter housing on top. Then pop the top and remove the screws on top to get the panel out of your way.Get the idler loose and remove the drum. Clean it all up and replace the motor. I can do it in 20 minutes. It is simple and uncomplicated. Go for it.

Series 80 dryer not holding a flame. the flame lasts 1-2 minutes then goes out. IT IS NOT the gas coils because i just replaced them. the thermal fuse gives me a beep from my multimeter. i ordered one

Must be the control thermostat. Note: them coils only stay on a brief period of time. They do not stay on indefinitely. The duration depends on how many wet clothes are in the dryer etc. The least amount of resistance to heat the quicker they shut down. The way it works is temp is maintained between 140f and 105f by doing a series of burns for breif amount of time. The coils do not remain on for very long. If they did the clothes would burn up. You need to remove inspect and clean the filter chute. Probably clogged. The dryer must be put back together for testing with damp clothes in the drum and the door closed.

The WHIRLPOOL TEDS840PQ0 dryer wont turn on. The

Check the house electrical panel dryer circuit breaker pair--push off, then on. Try the dryer again. If still nothing, measure the voltage across the two slanted slots in the dryer power socket. It should measure: ~230 volts AC. If at or near zero, either one of the breaker pair is defective, or a wire is open from the breaker to the socket. If you read ~230 volts, then the problem is within the dryer--motor runs, but drum doesn't turn (broken belt), or motor doesn't run (bad controller, motor, door switch, start switch. Does the unit get hot? Need more help on your end.

My Amana dryer gets clothes stuck between the drum. how do i fix this

Sounds like the drum bearings are worn out. this leaves a gap for the clothers to stick into. You will need to replace them. Check the support rollers also when you have it apart.
