Whenever I print or copy, a thick black line appears on the back of the printed copy. It looks like leaked ink, but is pretty symmetrical.
I have same problem, with new ink cartridge, also tried cleaning the print head, no luck.
I called Canon tech support and this seemed to have worked.
I have Windows XP
Control Panel, Printers & Faxes
Right-Click on Canon MP530 Series Printer
Properties, Maintenance
Run the "Bottom Plate Cleaning" function a few times. I ran 5 or 6 times. Put a slight fold in the paper, as the dialogue instructs.
So far so good.

Same problem, roller cleaning is only temporary. Even bought new printhead, same problem. Printer is only 1 1/2 yrs old. Had a couple of HP's for years with no problems. Canon sucks.
I have the same problem and have tried all the fixes suggested but to no avail. In fact, if anything, the line on the bottom is getting wider and wetter. I'm at wits end with this thing. Any new info from anyone?
Some of that ink leaked out on one of the rollers. You'll have to open it up more and find all the different rollers...or anywhere the paper passes through.

I have the same problem. I have already exchanged the ink cartridge PGI-5 as the ink seems to be dripping onto the roller located underneath this cartridge. I have also replaced the print head - no change.
I will take my printer in for service today, so perhaps I will be able to tell you soon what causes the problem. I refilled the cartridges, perhaps this causes the problem.
Same thing. If you print about 15 pages, it will blot up that spilled ink. Where can we buy commercial grade printers that don't cost a cajillion dollars in (spilled) ink?
Hi!
Exact same problem... what can we do?
Does anyone have a solution to this problem? I have this thick black line running down the middle of the back of my page, whether I copy or use the printer it is there. I've run the bottom cleaner and it the line is still there. Very annoying because it bleeds through so the printed page is useless. Any solutions besides the bottom cleaner that hasn't seemed to work for me? Thank you, Dawn
Soory - new to this site and I just posted my problem under solutions. I have the exact same problem and have tried all the solutions suggested but my problem just keep getting worse. I hope somebody has the real solution besides just buying a new printer.
Sorry - new to this site and I just posted my problem under the solutions section. OOPS!! Anyway, I have tried all the solution suggested to no avail. I use only new Canon ink cartridges and my problem just seems to be getting worse. The line is getting wider and wetter every day. I hope someone has the answer because otherwise I love this printer.
I had the same problem so I finally tried all the maintenance solutions (clean roller, bottom plate, heads...). Now I have two thick lines instead of one in the back of every page! Any solution besides getting a new printer?
Line is obviously painted on the back of the page by a source of leaked ink. It comes and goes. Overall about half of all pages are ruined. Line tends to decrease in intensity or disappear if six or more black and white pages are printed in succession. I have tried all the cleaning routines in the operating manual without success. From the number of postings on this issue, looks like Canon has a problem to solve.
We are having the same problem with the wide black line on the back of the paper when we are copying and printing. Has anyone heard of a solution? We've tried all of the cleaning processes.
Same problem. Tried the solution #2 above without success. In fact, it made the problem worse. I replaced the new PGBK 5 cartridge and put in the old one. Help!
only happens when used as a copier
