Coleman Powermate 5000 starts with starter fluid, but leaks gas into the air filter. Checked the float, it has no holes, and is not jammed. Fuel will go into the carburetor, but no fuel will reach the spark plug. Replaced plug, can fire it up with starting fluid, but can not get it to stay on with its own gas. Help?

Sounds like you need to clean the carb ports, lines, jets, etc... purchase a carb spray cleaner with a tube to place on the spray head (Berryman's Chemtool B-12 is awesome). Take the carb loose from the generator, and remove the bowl, needle valve and spray carb cleaner thru all the holes, lines in the carb. Reinstall complete with air cleaner and retry... also if the gas is old, drain and replace with new...

Is there a gas filter on coleman 5000? runs until hot then shuts off

There is somewhat of a filter inside the tank, however your issue could be air lock or faulty oil sensor. Try running the generator with gas cap loose to allow more air into the tank. If cap is fault try to clean cap vent ports with carb cleaner or just replace the cap. If not fuel lock, remove wire from oil sensor and test again.

I have a Coleman Powermate 4000 watt generator. Gas is leaking from the bottom of the carburetor. What is wrong?

Hello Pete,

Is fuel actually leaking from the bottom of the bowl, or is leaking out the air filter and running down to the bowl?

If the former, then your bowl bolt's gasket has likely deteriorated. This would allow fuel to run down the bolt itself. Note that some carburetors will have a fuel shutoff solenoid (to the engine, not to the carburetor) that holds the bowl on, rather than a bolt. There will still be a gasket though. Turn fuel off before trying to service.

If fuel is running out from inside the carburetor (through air cleaner, etc), then you have a float / needle that is stuck. This is quite common after a small engine has been in storage and fuel was left in the carburetor. The residue causes the float to stick to the bottom. Turn the fuel off, undo the bolt that holds the bowl on, and carefully remove the carburetor bowl. Use a can of carburetor and choke cleaner to spray out the "gunk" in the bowl, spray off the float, and then reassemble. If it still leaks, then your needle seat will need to be replaced as well.

Powermate 5000 leaks gas from the air filter..not sure how it's getting into the air filter?

My Coleman Generator 5000w with a Tecumseh 10hp story. Mine engine finally did die before I pulled the carburator off.
On mine the float was defective. It was full of fuel! I repaired the hole in it. I removed the air filter and saw fuel pouring out the side so much that I had a jar to catch it. I removed the carburator and took the nut off the bowl to examine the float. Then I removed the pin holding the hinged end of the float. Carefully pulled it out with the needle valve attached. When I removed the needle valve (just slides on mine) it was free to test. I tested by shaking it near my ear and I could hear the fuel inside the float. Mine was brass or copper. I wiped mine off with a napkin and finally found the hole. I drained the fuel by polking a needle sized hole and removed the fuel. I then soldered the hole shut with using just electronic 60/40 resin solder and a small soldering iron. Mine works like a champ now.

Engine dies

Your carburator is gummed up !
Take the float bowl on the bottom of the carb and spray the main fuel jet out with cleaner, do this to the idle needle valve also. If that don't work pull the carb & take apart & soak overnight in parts cleaner & blow out all ports & orfices with compressed air.
Next time you store your generator with gas in it , use a fuel stabilizer !
Good luck !
