Where are you trying to log in to? That is the crucial question.
Apple do that if you log in on a different device. Your normal device gives you a temporary password, and you add that to the other device. Making it work is very hit and miss and if you do it wrong it ignores further tries. You have to use your own password, then add theirs with no spaces.
