I took my camera to the beach, took maybe 10 pictures and then when to take more and when i turned the camera on it said access on the screen and the lens came out and went back in maybe 2-3 times and it starts beeping and says turn off and turn on again, but it does the same thing. I have only had is a few months!!!! How do I fix??????????
I was ready to throw the Damm thing.. tried pulling on the lens.. no good.. but banged the bottom of the camera on the table and it worked!!!! Started out softly and increased the banging and it real really worked.. Sony needs to get their act together... this is serious business..
SAME PROBLEM!!!! everytime i turned my camera on it said "acess" then the lens would go in and out 2 to 3 times before beeping and a message that read "turn camera off and on again"... frusterated and ready to whip out $150 for a new camera i did a little internet reseach and found the solution!
Tugging on the lens didnt really work and i got fusterate so decided to tap the bottom on the camera with my palm. All resulted in nothing! So finally I just gave it about 5 bangs to a wooden table top (the BOTTOM on the camera) and it WORKED!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had the same problem - pulling the lens didn't help but gently banging the camera on the desk did! Honest - it' something physical not electronic and the lens can't fully extend.
I had the same problem with the Sony dsc-w55, access, then turn the power on and off. I pulled gently on the lense a couple of times and boom it works fine, I think it has to do with the battery being fully charged, everyone I've talked to with the same camera has had the problem. Good thing it worked because I was about to throw the thing out the f#%&ing window. Thanks
I thought this was a joke, sounded like a good way to break my camera, tried pulling on the lens, wull that didnt work, turned the power off and than on again until the access message came up and then slammed it on my desk pretty damn hard and it fixed it.
I thought you were all nuts, but by god banging the hell out of it works! Thanks.
I banged my camera and that didn't work at first but the combination of banging, tugging on the lens, banging again, tugging and cleaning the lens----ALL WORKED. YEAH. THANKS everyone for your suggestions. Wow---I love search engines and thinking of looking for a solution to universal problems this way!! Whew - hoo!
I had the same "access" problem as everyone else - but here's the real way to permanently fix this problem when banging and smacking it barely works.
1 - Remove battery and memory stick. Back up the mem stick if necessary or paranoid.
2 - Using a small Phillips head screwdriver, remove all of the screws you see from the front (lens side), right and left sides of the camera. Then remove all three of the covers and place aside.
3 - Clean and remove all dirt & dust in and around front of camera, paying special attention to areas close the lens and lens housing areas.
4 - Insert battery and close the battery cover and then PLACE THE CAMERA RIGHT-SIDE UP ON A FLAT, NON-METALLIC SURFACE, MAKING SURE THAT YOU'RE NOT TOUCHING ANY OF THE EXPOSED CIRCUITS OR WIRING TO AVOID POTENTIAL SHOCK. This isn't a danger issue, more of a cover-my-*** related note. When I did this for my DSC-W55 I touched it just about everywhere without receiving generating anything close to a shock.
5 - Press the power button. If lens does open fully and you're still receiving the "access" message, continue powering off and on while using a toothpick or compressed air to remove remaining dirt and dust particles.
6 - When you're DSC-W55 is back in business - and after you've tested it multiple times via several on/off cycles, begin replacing the covers one at a time. The trick is to replace one cover, then to test the camera again via several on/off cycles. Do this until you've reattached all covers and camera is fully operational once again.
Tip - you may find success early by varying the tightness of the screws for each side's cover as you move along the on/off cycle process.
I had the same problem with mine (when I powered it on it said 'access' and told me to powercycle my camera) and I tried everything to fix it. Tapping, banging, pulling the lens...everything. Finally I pulled the technical manual for the camera (available here in 3 files http://eserviceinfo.com/download.php?fileid=43276 ) and, after taking the face plate off, found the problem. There is a spring that follows the top of the lens housing inside the camera which controls the view focus (the old style lens, not the LCD) and works by pulling a slide back when the camera is turned off. It took a little work to get to it but if you pull the flash housing out of the way (the thing that has what looks like a AA battery connected to it...be careful cause it may give you a light shock) I was able to reconnect the spring. I put a dab of superglue on each end of the spring connection where it hooks to the sliding tray and housing and let it dry. I've given it a few test trials since then and it works fine. Put everything back together and the camera is good as new.
Sony HAS to know about this problem because, during the first 90 days I owned the camera, I had to get it replaced twice because of this issue. The last time it happened (third time in less than a year and a half) Sony told me it would be $150+ to repair because they'd have to replace internal componants. $150 for a spring I was able to reconnect with a small screwdriver and pair of tweezers...not saying they're scamming people, but I'll probably never buy a Sony again after that....
I had a similar problem except that one of my children had hit the lens when it was extended! A helpul guy in a camera shop twisted and manipulated the lens for me and got it to retract again, but it only solved the problem intermittently. His diagnosis was that the nylon gears that move the lens had been damaged and there was nothing that could be done except a repair which could cost almost as much as the camera.
So, I bought a camera with a broken LCD screen from ebay for £25 and changed the lens. Not an easy job, but not impossible.
1 Remove the screws in the sides of the camera and lift away the two side covers
2 Remove the screw on the underside of the camera and clip off the front cover
3 Carefully lift out the flash light and associated capacitor - be careful if the camera has been turned on recently. I understand the capacitors can hold a hefty charge for the flash and a nasty shock is possible although I didn't have a problem.
4 Lift out the lens assemly and carefully pull the two circuit connectors from the adjacent board.
5 Do the same with the original camera.
6 Re-fit the new lens unit - the circuit connectors have locking clips that flip over to hold the lens connectors in place.
7 Press the flash assembly back into the casing over the new lens - this holds the lens in place.
8 Reassemle the casing - steps 1 and 2
Guess what - the camera powered up with the access message again and the lens moved in and out a few times before evenually retracting!! However a gentle tap followed by some very gentle twisting of both parts of the new lens and it's working perfectly. Obviously I don't know what had happened to the lens of the donor camera, but I can only conclude from these posts that Sony has produced a lens that is simply not robust enough for day to day use, although the picture quality is superb. I spent the evening watching TV powering the camera on and off and zooming in and out, all with the lens facing downwards in the hope that any grit in the new lens would be expelled - all seems perfect now.
Anyway, thanks so much to these contributors because I almost put both cameras in the bin when the lens exchange didn't work initially!!
I too had the same problem! Gently tugging on the lens didn't work but lightly banging the bottom of my camera on the desk did work! THANK YOU!! I was THIS freaking close to tossing the camera out the window doing about 90. Hopefully Sony can address this issue, but in the meantime... I shall fix it manually. :D
I have the same problem with you...how to pull the lens???
Thank you guys so much for the pulling off the lens solution, my camera now works - oh yes.... Was considering buying a new camera till I read all of your solutions.
You are all legends.... pull it, do it, live it x
You guys are great!! Spent hours trying to get rid of the Access message and in frustration found your solution, give it a whack - it worked. Funny I never considered doing this to a digital device before - it used to work with my old valve TV
Hi i need mixi 65210 ic for digital camera
how much? and how myuch is shipping? thanks.
Banging it worked for me. I banged it only once, and not very hard -- I actually just smacked the base of it into the palm of my hand, and now it works fine. My plan was to start slowly and bang harder more and more until it started working, but after the first smack into the palm of my hand it worked. It was a confident, but not overly hard smack. Sony DSC-W55.
Fantastic!
Took the damn thing to the SONY centre. They couldn't help and wanted to see me a new camera for
About to go on holiday, decided to empty camera by downloading pics onto my laptop. Halfway through camera failed, saying ACCESS, turn off and on again. Couldn't get the damn thing to do anything. Thought I had done something wrong in the downloading process. Really p*****ed off. Went to Sony Shop next day because desparate for camera for hols. They said £100 to be sent away for repair or £99.99 to buy new camera.
Typed into GOOGLE. Found all these solutions and it now works fine! Banged it, turn it on, held lens out and GREAT!
SONY must have known about this but wanted me to buy a new camera. Now really happy and taking camera on hols!

Guys Banging the cam really works it worked for me as well.....so do it
and sony u most think once again or u will lose ur customer
Ok, so I too took my Sony Dsc-W55 to the beach. The next day I tried to access the photos I took and the screen was all black and said "access". When I tried to turn it off the lens would go in and out 2 or 3 times and then it would shut off.
Pulling the lens didnt work for me and tapping it lightly did nothing. I hated to do it but I banged that ****** hard on the table about 4 or 5 times. I mean hard, hard, hard. Turned it back on and it worked like new!
Thanks everyone!!!
TJ
'Access' or lens zooming in/out before requesting 'turn power on/off again' is because focal lens inside lens unit cannot initialise & requires manually resetting.
If you are in the UK I can help you out.

I was skeptical... My cats were playing with the wrist strap and knocked the camera off the table. Then comes the dreaded ACCESS error message. Banged the bottom of the camera 2 or 3 times as instructed and alas goodbye error messages. THANK YOU!!!
Oh please someone help
im going crazy trying to make this work. pulling the lens doesnt work and neither does hitting the bottom
I banged the camera really hard on the counter and now it amazingly works. What does it hurt to try this. Someone told me to bang the camera because that is what he did and his worked too.
Holy cow, thanks for these posts!!! This camera has been sitting in a drawer for almost a year and a half with this problem... but I read these posts and saw that banging it on the desk seemed to work for a lot of people, so I tried it- with the camera off- and turned it on and voila- it's working again!!! I'm so excited! It needed a pretty good whack, and it takes a while for it to turn on, but it's working again! Thanks a bunch!!!
Bang it! It worked for me too!!!!
Banging the bottom works. So strange toy !
Same problem....banging was the only thing that worked. except a "slight" bang didn't do it for me...i had to give it a hard bang.....and quite a few of them.
thanks, though.
I have the same problem!!!!
but banging the camara is not working :(
Thank you for the BANGING ADVICE... WORKED FOR US!!!! IF YOU EVER HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ANY ELECTRONIC DEVICE.... JUST BANG THE ****!!!!!!!!!!!
peace.
Same problem solved with a simple bang on the bottom....thanks all!
I'd like to thank everyone for the banging advice. It worked for about a minute however I couldn't get the thing to focus and haven't had any luck since. To be retired to the toy box.
Thanks Sony.
I dropped mine in the pub, thought i had buggerd it, saw the tips on here re pulling lens and gentle banging....worked like a bloody charm! Cheers guys
I also had the same problem, took about 50 photos at an air show and the 'access' error occured - I was gutted! however after a brief bang on the desk when I got back, its started to work again!!!!
Another technical issue solved with a good old bang!
Sony get it sorted ............
OMG EXACT SAME PROBLEM. Gently tugging on lense - nothing, banging on desk - worked! Thanks :) I had nothing to lose at that point, I was minutes from buying a new camera, thanks! Boo to Sony though!
The pulling on the lens solution did not work for me. So I tried the suggestion of gently banging the camera on the table. . .It worked. That leads me to believe it has something to do with an electrical connection that is not making contact. Sony needs to take a look at this and redesign a fix to this on-going issue.
Yes It works !!! softly banging the bottom of the camara worked. also..Has anyone tried using the bottled air to blow it out??
I had the same problem. I pushed on the len of my camera and and it solved the problem. Thank's for the hit !
I was about to pack up & ship my Cybershot to Sony for repar b/c of the ACCESS error. I'm sooo thankful I read these posts first. My husband bangs the bottom of the camera and it works. The bummer is that EVERY TIME it is turned on - it has to be banged - not very happy with Sony right now! I'm debating whether or not it's worth it to send it in. Has anyone had a camera with a similar problem successfully repaired by Sony?
Thanks!
Thank you guys so much for the pulling off the lens solution, my camera now works - oh yes.... Was considering buying a new camera till I read all of your solutions.
You are all legends.... pull it, do it, live it x
I turned on my camera and when the lens started to come out I pulled it a little and it worked almost immediately.
thanks so much!!
I love my camera but l already posted a warning in amazon because I didn't pay for a camera that needs to be shaken or pulled to work, no way. Maybe SONY will pay attention to this problem.
If the design of your camera is not 'All Weather', don't take the risk to use it on the beach. Because sand contact can cloud the lens/LCD, and jam the zoom lens. I suggest to use compressed air (in can) to blow the joining parts of the lens tubes. Do the same to the front lens cover, which probably got jammed by sand too. In your case, most likely is the lens cover won't shut. Good luck!
I have the same problem but i didnt take it to the beach.. i didnt take it anywhere dirty.. its been in a clean case in my new (clean) purse .. so HELP ME!!!
i have tried everything.. the battery is fully charged
and i am really confused

Usually answered in minutes!
I followed the advice of someone on another site & he suggested VERY GENTLY pulling the outer piece of the lens when it came out. I did it & it worked!
I am having this exact problem about the access button and the camera telling me to turn it off and on again. Battery is fully charged and it just kept getting stuck at the "Access" message. Just tried the suggestion to very gently pull on the outer lens and it seems fixed! Never would have known that! Thanks to whoever wrote that in Fixya!!!
I am having the same problem - when I switch on,the lens goes in and out 3 times and I am told to turn it off and on again. Battery is fully charged and it
just kept getting stuck at the "Access" message. Just tried the
suggestion to very gently pull on the outer lens but it hasn't fixed it for me. Any other suggestions?
I have the sony dsc-w55 with the same access problem as well. I tried the lens suggestion but it did not work for me. I really want to find a solution for this. I'm going on vacation soon and I would hate to have to buy a new camera. Any help would be awesome.
Same problem.  Access message, in and out lens nonsense and then request to turn it off and on again.
I will try the gently pulling it solution but, come on. Â Â
Sony needs to address this issue.
SAME PROBLEM!!
I have the same problem - lens goes in and out, won't stay out, "access" message on the screen. this is the 2nd camera this has happened to = Sony has done nothing - the first one, I could never fix it , Sony said it must've been dropped (and since my daughter had used it, I couldn't be sure). The fee to send it in to get fixed (not covered by warrantee) was almost as much as a new camera. Took the camera apart, never could fix it. Stupidly bought another one - loved the features, thought we had done the damage. This camera has never left my sight, never been dropped or mishandled in any way. Now, same problem after only a few months - lens in and out repeatedly, "access" message. HELP!!! I'm going to go insane!!!
I had the same problem last year, my shutter wouldn't open to take pictures after I took a few at the beach earlier in the day and it seemed to have moisture in the lense. I had to end up using my cell phone camera. Not until later back at the hotel did the camera start working again, it must have something to do with moisture in the air. I just went to the beach this past weekend and the same thing is happening but the lense isn't opening at all, you turn it on , it says access and beeps and says turn off and on again but nothing happens, I can view pictures I already took but can't take anymore since the shutter won't open.
i too have the same problem.. please let me know if the solution is there for this
i have same problem plz guide me
I have the same problem... was shooting pictures and turn off camera for 10 minutes and came back and now it won't work. It says Access and tells me to turn on and try again. Nothing happens.. I can see pictures that I have taken but can't use camera to take more pictures
I just started having the exact same problem. I've had my (adorable pink) one for a little over a year now, and just the other night it started happening. I thought it was just b/c there wasn't enough light where I was to focus the lens, but it still happened after moving to a well-lit area. I read some of these solutions and tried these things: While it was off I tapped the bottom of the camera somewhat forcefully onto the palm of my hand, then when I turned it on, when the lens was doing the whole in/out thing I slightly held the lens out for a few seconds. Miraculously the "access" screen disappeared and the picture came onto the LCD screen, thank goodness!
OMG! Â I thought it was crazy but I had nothing to lose, the camera wouldn't work and just said "access". Â So, I banged the bottom of it and IT WORKED! Â Glad I looked here instead of calling SONY. Â I bet they wouldn't have told me to give it a good rap!
