I have a Panasonic Lumix FZ100, purchased in December 2010, and the flash has not been working since about April 2013. It has been wet a couple of times. The worst time was in Alaska in May 2011, when the drizzle just kept coming down. Lots of functions stopped operating then, and I was pretty worried until it all dried out and began working again. The flash started playing up more seriously in about March 2013, but still functioned intermittently until April 2013. Recently I have used a flash on the hot shoe without any problem. There is no whining noise when the flash is popped up in a darkened room, but there is no noise either with the (working) flash of my new LZ200. The abuse history, slow failure, and hot shoe operation are all the clues I can provide. Is the problem serious? Do I have a chance of repairing it myself (I have a little background in electronics, but am no technician)? The service manual for the FZ100, downloaded from the web, is a bit daunting, and I do not have all the tools listed (in particular, no torque driver). Or should I take it to a Panasonic camera specialist and pay the AUD100 or so? BTW, I live in Australia. Regards, Bruce Morrison
AS you know, cameras are very sophisticated and delicate, and messing with it yourself might lead to more damage..It sounds like maybe you have a connection or connector that may have corrosion on it that is getting worse over time. That's what I would look for. If you don't see anything obvious after taking whatever you need to apart to see the areas that moisture may have gotten into, I would take it to a qualified technician to have it diagnosed..Good luck.
SOURCE: Problem - Turn off and turn on again - happens repeatedly
We see this camera often because the lens gets compressed some how and the plastic gears which drive it become damaged, this would be the "buzzing" noise you're hearing during power up. The camera is not passing its power up diagnostics and therefore it shuts down. The lens is not cost effective to replace on this camera, parts and labor exceed a replacement units cost. Hope this is some help. Good Luck Joe Weibel Custom Electronics (customelectronics.org)

I have just had this problem - was about to take it to shop for a checkover when I held shutter button down and then turned on - viola - don't know if it was a fluke or what

Hi there.
You will find time and date in the settings menu on the camera.
Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Hello,
It will not work through USB like a standard webcam. Ls-70 only lets you access camera memory card/onboard memory when connected via USB.
However you
could connect the camera video-out socket to a PC with graphics card
with video capture function. Some cards with video capture work with
skype (check this URL:
http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=41101 )
There are also various software solutions which can fool your webchat client into thinking that video capture stream is actually an output of a usb webcam. (Try google for "video capture into skype".
At the moment this seems to be the only easy way to use LS-70 as webcam.
Good luck,
Raf

Class 6 and 10 cards are high speed cards suitable for videos....they write fast and don't get hung up. With that said, I use a Sandisk class 2 and a class 4 and have never had a problem with either one.
